Prestige Classes

Post by Galadorn » Tue May 27, 2003 6:47 am

(probably THE coolest thing in 3rd edition)

Before I ask the question about this on Avlis, and inevitably be told to "read the associated post" already up about it, let it be known that I have browsed all forums, and all posts already and have not "seen" one on this topic...
So...
Can anyone tell me what's up with Prestige Classes, and how to attain one, etc. Obviously they must be DM granted, so if so, please let me know what to do to eventually GET a prestige class.
(eeerr... or just respond with that previous-post-URL-already-up that I missed) ....

:)
Thank you!

Avlis rules.

SoU expansion will put them into the game engine.

You only need to qualify for NWN's requirements (see the NWN boards) and then you just take a new "class" when you level up.

That simple.

Just as an addendum, I believe I read in another post that the team would see how they would impliment the SOU expansion Prestige classes. We might need a few conceptual changes to such classes as the Harper Scout to get them to "fit" into the world.

I'm sorry if I don't have the link, but I know I haven't seen an 8 pages of posts about it.

YES.
Thank you very much.
(i only ask because i noticed in some of the feat descriptions, the prerequisite sections of some feats states to have them you need for example: "DEX 13, DODGE, Shadowdancer level 1, etc")

"Shadowdancer level 1!!!!", I said.

Coolio. :)

So we'll be allowing every rogue to take a level in shadowdancer just to get the hide in plain sight ability? EVERY rogue will do it. Not because they're a shadowdancer IC, but because OOC they know they can get a cool ability with only 1 level spent. If I take it, I'll be taking the rest of my levels in that class, just don't expect 90% of the player base to do it.

I think they should require the same things that custom races do. Or simply a couple sponsors from known players. Anyone else feel the same way?

If I remember from the previous discussion about this we will not be allowing all prestige classes.

Harper scout is forgotten realms, so is right out.

The Blackguard will probably be the holy warrior for the Maleki church.

Other PrC's will be decided upon when SoU is a fact. It is pretty much obvious that not all players will automatically qualify for a prestige class if they meet the coded requirements. There will probably be some way to grant them by dms only, but until SoU comes out we can not say how exactly that is going to be implemented.

Oh, I misunderstood Jad's post. I took it as meaning that it would be just fine to select the class as soon as you're able to. Thanks for clearing that up a bit.

I just found a post dated to February on the issue. It seems that you will need an IC reason to prestige class and will of course need DM approval before it is enabled. That is the basic summary of about 2 pages of posts. Of cousre, we have a bit over a month to wait by the best estimates before the expo is released, then we have any of a number of weeks/months before the team decides how they will implement it into the game. In the meantime, sit back, chill, enjoy some good RPing, the issue will take care of itself when the time comes.

On a related note, will we be able to install SoU and still play here even though the servers haven't upgraded? Better be able to...

There are always ways around those sort of things Liartes if there isn't compatibility

If you have the hard drive space (most people do these days), I'm sure you can instal mulitiply copies of NWN your hard drive. Just change the directory information at the beginning and make it a different folder. Actually, I dont' know how effective that will be for NWN because I haven't tried it yet, but I know it works for other games that I have tried it for.

I'm sure our computer gurus can provide other ideas as well, and who knows, it may not even be a problem.

Probably not. Knowing bioware they will probably make NWN+SoU another version number than NWN, which means you can't connect because NWN demands sever and client to run the same version of NWN.

Of course the suggested double install will probably fix this issue. I for one will just wait until Avlis updates, which won't be very long I expect.

Ah, thanks for the tip Vergilius. I'll just have a second install so I can try out those neat classes without having to wait.

Um, actually if you install SoU and we have not yet installed it onto the Avlis servers, you should still be able to log on. I hear it's backward compatible. The only thing that would NOT work is if we installed SoU on the Avlis servers and you tried to log on with a normal NWN copy.

Any presitge class that has to do with Forgotten Realms will not be available. However, things like shadowdancer and arcane archer pretty much have nothing to do with any specific world, so they will be ok. Blackguards will be the Maleki holy warriors, yes. Just like you need to worship Gorethar to be a Paladin on Avlis, you need to worship Maleki to be a Blackguard. *rolls his eyes when he just realizes he increased the size of the church of Maleki fivefold by that statement*

I am also HOPING, i.e. crossing my fingers and praying, that CODI will be able to figure out how to make a custom character class or prestige class generator from the improvements in SoU. They made a custom race generator, so I still have a lot of hope for that. If a custom class generator ever came about, you would see a whole slew of prestige classes come out. But that's just a dream at this point.

The alignment requirements for a blackguard are "Any Evil", which would suggest that a follower of any evil god on Avlis could become a blackguard, unless you wanted to specifically restrict it to Maleki for your own reasons.

By default, most if not all the PrC's will require going though some sort of dialog in order to take a level in them. That means we can control what classes are alowed, and who gets them though dialog options.

But some of the PrC's, have the ablity to sponsor other PC's. The harper scout for example can sponsor one other PC as a harper scout. I don't know if there's much or anything we could do about this.

But I personaly wouldn't worry about everyone taking 1 level of something, simply for the ablity it gives. First off, we can't controll that really. There's far to many PC's out there. If we could, we would of already been stopping rogues from taking one level of fighter for the free weapon/armor feats.

SoU will be backwards compatable with NWN. Bioware said this quite clearly some time ago. And I don't think it's changed. You can play on a NWN only modual, with NWN/SoU but you won't have access to the SoU abilites, skills, spells, feats, ect... However NWN won't work with a modual made with SoU. So when we install SoU on the server, you must have SoU to play on Avlis.

He does, and is. Heh I lost that debate months ago. Blackguards are Maleki only, period.

Not alignment restricted though. So far as I have read a blackgaurd follower of maleki can be any evil. He/she just happens to serve a CE diety. That in itself could eventualy shift the character to CE also. So if you are LE now, and want to be a blackguard, you still qualify. Maleki is not the type to realy care enough about such things. He is the diety of freewill you know. So if you realy want to follow the law, then hey, that is your choice. As long as you remember to let NOTHING stop you from futhering his gouls.

What about the Assassin class?

And that's good news about being backward compatible.

actually Orleron has previously posted about the warriors of Maleki
Anti-Paladins (Chaotic Evil):
Anti-Paladins worship Maleki.

This class exactly follows the Anti-Paladin given in the DM's Guide for 3rd Edition. DM intervention would be needed to achieve it.

The chaotic warriors of Maleki have no distinguishable organization. They only have a recognition and a reverence for the god that they hold dear. Their god-given desire is to spread destruction, hardship, and evil in the world in order to benefit themselves. Wherever things are found to be proceeding in a good and orderly fashion, Anti-Paladins can be found working against it, usually for the sheer pleasure of it.
so if this is the role that the Blackguards are going to fill, then they will be CE restricted. I guess we will find out in a month or so....

Or 2 months, or 3 months, depending on how far the release continues to get pushed back.

If these guys were writing software for my company they'd be long gone by now.

I've never had my own personal shitlist for a player before. Congrates CuRoi you're my first. Samantha tell CuRoi what he's won.

Wellllll CuRoi you've won yourself a personal DM Kill and one way ticket to the fabulous Limbo plane. While in this excellent island getaway, all exit transitions will be disabled and death XP penalties will be doubled. In addition to the numerous Slaads, a special visit of Titanean nymphs will be present to catch you in their gaze over and over again. After your lovely getaway, you'll be whisked away to the teams watchlist and promptly banned. Travel courtesy of The'ton's DM Wand.
