. . . but wow! Is there an awful lot to read! Is Avlis based on any mainstream world or created just for NWN play here? I'd love to by a guidebook or something rather than flip through endless pages online (but I'll do that if necessary.)

Avlis is based on a PnP world created by Orleron and ceardan some, uh.. 30 years ago originally? It's not what you'd call a mainstream world (FR, Dragonlance, yadda yadda). There's work going on right now to have a sourcebook finished, but there isn't one right now, so you'll just have to read through stuff online.

This is a homebrew campaign, Laddy. And you've probably already done this, but just to make sure...

1. Fill out your Player App right away, so it's processed in time for your week of gaming.

2. Read the Getting started section of the wiki. Pay special attention to the Player guide, Character creation and the custom race system. There's lots of races available. You can even play a full-blooded orc!
