Is there any means of controlling which arrows gets drawn?

Post by AyounTheDark » Mon Jul 10, 2006 3:08 pm

(sp?)

I've noticed several times that my character draws some other arrows than I'd like him to. And I've tried to place the arrows in my top inventory screen, for him to draw those when done with the batch he's shooting with.

Is there means to control which one's comes up next?

Oh.. And now I'm in ask the team, can I get some fat nasty rapier + alot with some nice extra damage? - Just leave a note for Callin at the Second Solace.

It is hardcoded that the most costly arrow gets draw first. I've heard that placing arrows in bags makes them unable to be chosen this way, but you'll have to test it first.

Also, IIRC, the first slot in any inventory screen is the lower left, and then it progresses from left to right, bottom to top.

Now that the Team has had a chance to answer, any of you other smart people know what's going on here?

Is it the most costly, or the most recently used?

I'm not sure, but I think I've had ammo run out and it switched to ammo that wasn't the best I had after that...

Placing arrows in bags doesnt stop them from being auto picked either.

From my experience, there is no pattern. My most expensive ones do not always get auto selected, nor do the cheapest. Arrows in bags can get auto selected, but not always. It has been suggested before that they are selected in alphabetical order, I have not noticed this and my acid arrows never seem to get auto selected (A and expensive). Someone else suggested to me that the most recent stack you have selected or moved will get auto selected next. I cannot verify or refute this, but I do make sure to regularly move cheap ones about and since doing that have not had any expensive ones auto selected. The domain of auto-arrow-selection belongs to Forian, ask him.

I find that in order to not use my best arrows I just handle a few quarrels of my standard arrows. Handling can be just picking them up and moving them to another slot (even in bags)

When I know I am gonna be using a few hundred arrows i just Handle 3 to 4 quarrels of MasterCrafted Arrows, and they get used in the order I last handled them.

So when you take that Arrow of hammering and place it in your bag/quarrel just make sure you move a few normal arrows about.

Correct AFAIK

Handling is what determines which arrows/bolts/bullets....get's selected.

If you move them in your inventory the last one you move will be the first one selected after the current one runs out.

Hah! Who ever thought it'd be that easy to get an answer from Forian?

In my experience, the arrow that was clicked on last is the next one drawn for use. I've also never had any arrows pulled out of my bags for use, even when they were the last ones picked. However, I always have a fair number of quivers in my top level inventory. If there were no more arrows left on your inventory pages, I'm guessing it would draw from your packs, but I haven't tried this experiment yet.

Strategically speaking that would be the best course of action indeed. Of course, who would have guessed that something so orderly could come from one so chaotic? Oh I know, he must have discovered this while trying to figure a way around it, now that makes sense.

As an experienced archer I can confirm the words of Forian here. The arrows are drawn in the reverse order of handling, ie. most recently handled first.

So this means that if I aquire more arrrows then I'll got through my quivers ordering them for use then and there.

I also keep 3-6 differing kinds of arrows quickslotted so that I can use the arrow that best suits the situation

Here's a big THANK YOU to AyounTheDark for posting this question... I thought there was no method to the madness and had given up trying to wrangle my arrow autoselection and never thought to just ask. Duh!

Wow, can you believe that there are actually players who don't read the Forums? I don't know what I'd do without them...

If you've worked with Leto and character .bic files, you'll know the most recently used/moved item gets rewritten at the top of the list in the file. Best guess is, it reads from the top of that file down for selection, though that list's order changes for all sorts of other reasons too. Bag order changing from other items being moved in and out of them is the big one. If you move stuff around in bag inventory much, arrows are just unpredictable.

No, it doesnt. BUT... If you place the arrows you dont want to use into a bag and leave the ones you want to use outside of the bag it will use the ones outside of the bags before it starts tapping into the ones inside the bags. So, in a way you do have some control of wich arrows it picks as long as you place the ones you want to use in your inventory and the ones you dont in a bag. Though, you should check your inventory once in a while to make sure you still have some of the arrows you want to use. Once you run out then it starts using whats in bags.
