Paco, I didn't mean to diss your post. I hope that this does drive up our subscribtions and traffic.
No worries :) , actually my last post wasn't directed to you.

I agree completely about WFM, I have actually been trying to subscribe but have had few problems which have been mentioned by others in other posts. I was only trying to say, in a not so clear manner, that even if things in the WFM haven't so far interested someone to subscribe, being able to shape the new upcoming NWN2-Avlis PW through debate and discussion should.

Cheers,

P

I can't even say how pleased I am to hear this! Time to hop onto WFM and get caught up.

Just an idee, but wouldnt it be a nice idee if the NWN2 avlis world would be one set in the future. A lot can change in a few 100 years or more, makes a good motive for a clean start...

I agree.

I truly love playing Avlis, but I'm also super pumped to see what NWN2/Avlis will be like!

Cheers to Orl and the team for their bold move and announcing this!

:D
+1 Cheers! I love Avlis and was not really planning on leaving when NWN2 get's out, but also looking for a similar world because I think it would be cool. To have avlis in NWN2 should be really awsome

When one of my ex-player friends got banned, he said to me

"so much time wasted" speaking of the previous year or 2 he has put into Avlis. If I quit tomorrow, I would not think that it was a waste of time. I have had a blast playing it, and as much as it seems different sometimes, its still a game.

Sure, it will suck to watch NWN1 Avlis die ( however slow it may be ) but I will gladly start over again if enough of the current community transfers over to it. I won't look back thinking, all that time to develope my charecter was wasted, because it wasn't. Its the same as any other game, when you beat the game, you stop playing it. ( well, atleast sometimes ) But just because you don't play, or you make a new charecter, does not mean that you wasted your time. You had fun, and thats what it was about.

The first thought I had when I heard NWN2 Avlis, is...all the time I put in my charecter would be wasted. But I thought about it, and it would be far from a waste. Like Amiru said, politics, guilds, everything will be a new start. that really sounds like alot of fun. A fresh slate, I look forward to what ever the choice is.

This is a rather stunning reversal of the party line. NWN2 will be released in less than 6 months... I'll post more on the World Forge forum.

I think this is going to require a hell of a lot of area building, but i am very pleased this is going to happen, the improved graphics and on the fly rendering of terrain and objects in the new engine will be AWESOME!

I hope the subcontractors get to help re-build Avlis :D

I like the idea of getting a fresh new start on NWN2. Although I don't like the idea of old Avlis phasing out, I like the idea of playing Avlis on NWN2 better. I can live with just saving my old characters to have something to remember old Avlis by.

Three years worth of crafting, maybe four by the time Avlis2 is ready.

I'm not sure I'm all that happy about it.

It's been said over and over and over and over and over and probably needs to be said again.

NWN1 Avlis isn't going to be immediately discontinued for whatever reason just because there'll be a NWN2 implementation.

Nice Strategic Vision...

The issue needed to be addressed. NWN1 is a fine game, but sticking with it in the long run would have equated to a slow suffocation... Membership steadily dropping as time passes.

What fun is that? NWN2 gives us something to look forward to.

NWN1 Avlis isn't going to be immediately discontinued for whatever reason just because there'll be a NWN2 implementation.

In addition to what Nob said, it helps to think about this logically.

We have 10 machines in PJ's garage. Each one can run at least one mod, and some can run two.

A NWN2 mod will probably need its own machine.

Now, how many NWN2 servers are we going to work on, at least at first? ONE.

So... if that needs one machine and we have nine left, what does that tell you?

How long does it take to get a server running to the point where we can think about a second one? Historically? 6 months to a year.

So how long would it be before we had TWO NWN2 servers? 6-months to a year. To run that machine, what would we do? Either A) Buy a new machine for it or B) Take a NWN1 mod offline and use it for NWN2.

Money is the issue for that. Machines cost money to buy and for electricity. If the money is there and the space in the garage is there, we can simply add a machine and not have to take anything off line. But right now, since that decision is probably years away, I don't know.

That's why I tell people we would gradually phase out NWN1, but it could take another 5 years to do so. Who knows?

Also, don't forget that as the years go on, processors get better, and it's feasible that in two or three years there will be processors that can run two or three or four mods with no problem.... which means we could cut down on space usage and keep all the mods around. But again, I don't know, so I have to cover my ass.

Bottom line is there's no reason to panic. Your character files will probably be around in the community longer than you are.

Just a question though, is the plan to re-create the areas similar to what they currently are in Avlis? e.g Mikona

My response is directed at all the responses, I only quote Nob because his most clearly exemplifies the misunderstanding you're all jumping on:

Which is why I added the "maybe four" onto my statement. I realize Avlis2 won't happen "immediately". My statement was merely an expression of sorrow over the amount of work I have put into my crafting skills, as well as all the work that has gone into making the system possible.

Should I be happier that Avlis1 is going to die a slow death, rather than a quick one? Personally, I'd rather it didn't die at all, but don't worry, I am completely aware that it will die someday. If you think I'm "scared" or "bitching", you are mistaken. I am mourning the eventual loss of Avllis1, and wish that there were some easy and equitable way for players to get some benefit from all the work they have put into their characters. (Note my stressing of the word "easy", I realize it isn't feasible, so please don't try to jump on that)

I have put a lot of time and energy into making Tanmar the character he is. Forgive me for being unhappy that it will eventually be for naught.

Nightface, did you ever consider the aspect of Legend?

By putting time into your characer and making them well-developed, you make them a figure in the history of Avlis. The more you document what the character did, the more immortal it will become.

Nobody plays a character forever. But if you do things like adding his history to the Heroes forum and documenting him on the wiki, you can get something out of it.

Doesn't mean I won't miss playing him. Hell, I'll even miss my seldom-played alts. Lots of emotional connection to my characters and the world. I completely blame you, Orl. It's all your fault for starting this place, you big Borg, you.

As for the Heroes of Avlis, it's a personal quirk, but I don't like tooting my own horn. I don't fault anybody for wanting to chronicle their characters deeds and accomplishments, but I've never liked doing that sort of thing. I feel like I'm simply bragging. I know, it's a stupid hangup, but it's there. Goes to show what a crappy roleplayer, I am, since I play Tanmar the exact same way!

Seriously. I'd prefer Heroes of Avlis if it was written by OTHER players, and how they saw your character. That, to me, seems 100x more interesting than writing about yourself. One can only hope that someone makes a Wiki entry about our characters and does write-ups on them based on their experiences with them. :D
