Can anyone explain this?
Only idea I had was that a 'natural 20' was always a save... is this the case?

A natural 20 is always considered a pass, so that's what happened here......
I guess it means by some fluke you passed the test (could be you ducked at right time, he tripped a little when attempting to aim the spell, whatever, but you passed

)
Same thing also applies to attacks, a natural 20 is always a hit.

I remeber playing a pnp ages ago which used to offer open ended when you got the maximum....IE if you got a 20 , you got to roll another die and add that too....was cool as it always meant you had the slim possibilty of getting an amzingly lucky shot

Natural 20s give you an automatic hit.
But natural 20s do not give an auto pass on skill checks or saving throws as far as I know.

i didn't think they were supposed to either. IIRC, i have seen a 20 rolled before and they still failed. but I could be imagining it, I would wait until a team member says something about it for sure though.

According to PH3.5, a natural 20 is an automatic success, and a natural 1 automatic failure, for attacks and saves, but not for skills, so this should be correct.

Moved to NWN General Discussion.
A natural 20 on a saving throw is always an automatic success in NWN. A natural 1 on a saving throw may or may not be an automatic failure depending on the module settings: this kind of automatic failure is disabled in Avlis.
There is not automatic success or failure in skill checks.
