Introducing the World Forge Magazine Team

Post by Orleron » Sun Dec 11, 2005 5:08 pm

Ladies and gentlemen! As you can see from the title, our new online magazine has been named World Forge: The Journal of Gameworld Environments, or World Forge Magazine for short. The mission statement for the publication is to act as a showcase for unpublished campaign worlds with an eye towards the particulars of their design. Eventually, it will also incorporate a section containing peer-reviewed academic works on the interface between virtual and real life worlds. As you may realize, the name "World Forge" was picked by one of our players, Simon Drat, who has won the contest for naming the magazine. Congrats, Simon! Please PM me when you get the chance. And now... I would like to introduce the Team whose first goal is to bring out our debut issue during the week of January 1st, 2006:
Orleron, Team Leader: You all know me! For this publication, I will be heading up the operation. My experience with editing and online magazine production is limited, but I have published over 20 peer-reviewed articles and have experience with team oganization and work flow. I also plan to play a big part in the academic pursuits of the publication once that starts rolling.
TripleAught, Chief Editor: As Chief Editor, TripleAught will be the person in charge of actually getting the issues online. He will have final say on what goes to print. In terms of past experience, he has quite a bit: 1) he wrote for the Salt Lake CVB during the 2002 Winter Olympics 2) he was the lead editor for online courses at Brigham Young University for 2 years 3) he worked in public relations agencies, both while in school and post-graduation, communicating with media outlets 4) he spent a year working in project management, freelance editing, and Web editing/design
5) Currently he is a marketing writer for a software company writing their monthly newsletter, re-designing their Intranet, re-positioning products, and maintaining the content of their web site.
machina, Marketing Consultant: In order to branch out and be prosperous, this magazine will need to get members from outside the Avlis community. machina is the man for that job. As an avid gamer and convention veteran, machina has rubbed elbows with many of the great names in table top RPG. He has many interesting connections that I won't name here (can't give away all our secrets, can we?). machina is also a leading figure down in the Philadelphia area among some of the RPG associations in that region.
Kit, Fanfic Editor: Kit is familiar to many of you who have submitted things to Minstrel Fiction, our current site. In this publication, he will remain onboard as the editor for fan fiction stories submitted to the site. The current fan fiction site can be thought of as a subset or sub-feature of the new site. We will still be accepting fan fiction submissions as always, and Kit will be here to get them into shape for posting. At this time, I am not sure if we will actually feature fan fiction stories as part of our regular magazine issues, but TripleAught has some thoughts on that. Kit is a professional editor. Currently he is a post-doctoral investigator who helps us out in his spare time.
As time goes on, we are likely to pick up some sub-contractors here and there, so keep an eye out for announcements. We are also well on our way towards gathering articles for our first few issues. If you have something you would like to submit, email tripleaught@avlis.org. The old fanfic website will be accessible from http://www.minstrelfiction.com until the new one goes live, at which time the address will be pointed to worldforgemagazine.com. Anyone who is currently a member of the fan fiction site will be automatically a member for the new site with no changes in payment amount or method.

Good luck - looking forward to reading it.

Weird, I was sure that I had suggested that name, but when I looked I found I had, but that someone else had indeed suggested it 24 hours before me without me noticing - nice one! I am such a dumbass.

Yes, you will be able to subscribe with credit cards directly, and the old pay pal option will still be there. We anticipate that quite a few people around here just hate paypal and will join up with credit cards when given the chance.

It's really gonna be a cool site. There will be a blog on the front page that is a lot like these news forums that will editorialize about games, and there will be some forums inside the site that will be available.

Jeepers, Orleron, I don't know what to say! Woo hoo hoo! :D

Thanks for picking one of my name submissions, I'm thrilled. Due to work and family constraints of late, I don't get to put in as much time IG as I'd like, so I'm really glad to have finally made some sort of significant impact around here, even if it had to be in an OOC way... :good:

I hereby donate 100% of my prize money to World Forge magazine! I wish you guys the best of luck on the launch of this promising new endeavor - I've been looking forward to reading / submitting to it ever since I first read about the FanFic revamp oh-so many moons ago...

Have a cool yule, everyone, and best wishes for the launch of World Forge!

Congratulations getting the operation working, and everyone who got a position. Looking forward to seeing it. (And seeing all those brand new supportive donations roll in of course  )

Thanks for all the encouragement. I'm very excited for January and expect to have an even busier holiday season getting ready for our launch.

And let me just take this chance to say that I'm looking ahead to February and March already. If you have content that you want to submit, or even just ideas for articles, go ahead and send me an email (tripleaught@avlis.org) or a PM.

I'm looking forward to getting flooded with interest now (hint, hint).

Congrats to those that made the team, good luck in your work.

Are there going to be items on Cafe' Press to promote the new website?

Eventually, but it's not a high priority as of yet. Cafe Press sales are generally horrid. We sell maybe one or two Avlis items every three months or so. In the beginning, we'll be concentrating on content, community, and meeting modest monetary goals to keep the mag and the servers running.
