Items of freedom protection?

Post by downsystem » Wed Nov 09, 2005 5:06 am

Does a item of freedom keep you free of the effects of spells that immobalize with a hand of force?

Depends on if the spells Stuns (then no) or Paralyzes (then yes) you.

...shesh those items are given out alot, especialy taking under account that it just forces mages to use big hands instead of "hold" spells that would give them a will save. Freedom should be handlet as serious as immunity mind spells.

I don't agree with this, but, I think one thing should be changed: Freedom shouldn't give immunity to the "slow" effect after death.

that means changing the death scripts rather than hooking a spell / item though

Items with the Freedom property are actually pretty rare on Avlis. Not as rare as mind immunity, but still hard to come by.

What's nice about them is that they aren't useful in just combat, but crafters love them as well. Makes it much more manageable to walk around with 1000 pounds of Ore if you aren't slowed down to a crawl.

Hang on a sec... are you saying that you don't get slowed due to encumberance (hmm.. is that the word X:| whatever)? Freedom should protect from the Slow / Paralysis / Entangle effects. It should have no difference to movement rate due to weight-based encumberance  Should it :?:

It is a powerful spell. I've never seen an item with it.

Ditto.

Doen't matter how heavily encumbered you are, with Freedom item/spell you are still able to walk rather than crawl..

And that's also true, that those items are damn rare and very very expensive. I saw two kind of belts, ring, amulet and helmet. Yes, on one-percenter ;)

That is correct. You do not get slowed due to encumberance. However, you still can't "run", but you will walk at your normal speed.

It also allows you to use both the "Move Stealthily" and "Detect Mode" options at the same time without the slowing affects compounding. You DO move a bit slower than normal, but not down to a crawl.

As for whether it "should" work that way or not, I'm not sure. I'm assuming that it's something hardcoded in the engine.

Again, AFAIK these items are pretty rare.

Wouldn't think it should make a difference with respect to encumbrance, but it does. And yeah, items with Freedom are pretty rare, and very valuable because of their usefulness and rarity.

I was under the impression that a ton of characters got some item with freedom after some little fairy war or something.

I agree that Freedom items should be equally if not more rare than protection from mind.

The reason is that, in addition to all of the other benefits brought out above, it also makes you immune to the Assassin Death Attack. Now that 1.66 fixed protection from mind spells making you immune to the death attack, the Freedom items are pretty much it.

IMO an item that makes you totally immune to a prestige class should be as rare as immune knockdown, speed boots, etc.

Or, what is even more ridiculous, encumbrance.

I seem to recall a Blue Mage gnome that has one of those belts. Seems there maybe more than you think. :D

Being immune to prestige classes special attack shouldn't make something rare in and of itself. There has to be more reason than that the person can't be sneak attacked, knocked down, FoDed or whatever. It should only be items and spells that give someone a significant and over-powered advantage over all other characters (like boots of speed, the major damage resist belts, etc) that should be restricted and rare.

It is really nice having a freedom item. I manage to buy mine some 15 years ago for a really decent price. I didn't know that it gave death attack immunity, which is pretty nice.
