How different is your character from yourself?

Post by anodynes » Tue Oct 04, 2005 3:02 pm

How do you pick that character alignment? what traits? what values/morals? Does anyone find they play many opposites of their own personality? How different is your character from yourself?

Let's compare your (PC) character's trait to your own real-life trait and see how close they are. Give yourself 0 points for PC traits that are the same as yours, 1 point for a PC trait that is similiar but a slight twist, 2 points for different but not totally opposite, 3 points if the PC trait of your character is totally opposite from your own real trait.

Judge yourself on these categories and give a score of 0 to 3 on each category:
1) male -or- female (this is a 0 or 3 value here...)
2) alignment (law vs chaos; evil vs good)
3) view on following orders: party leader, government, and groups that your not part of but have power in an area (possibly military, etc); do you take orders -or- are you someone that fights authority?
4) view on religion or divine beings (do you believe in a higher power?)
5) friendships and social interactions: do you have lots of friends -or- only a few
6) follow through: with tasks, duties, goals, motives; keep true to your word: lying/cheating, taking oaths, loyalty, etc
7) use of coins: donating to every charity -or- greedy to the point of robbing the poor blind beggar
8) personality: loud and proud vs timid and meek.
9) physical prowness versus mental: are you the physical jock (dex, con and str) or the scholar (cha, int, wis)?
10) When there is trouble: do you rally to an ally's side, stand and defend only your own, encourage others to think about leaving, -or- slide out the backdoor abandoning all?

Now enter in the poll how many points you scored.

I reckoned about 11-15 between me and Kered. The main difference is that he believes utterly in the maxim "The ends justify the means" whereas I despise it and see it as an excuse for doing bad things. I am more "The means are the ends"

I don't drink... and I don't stab people. That already sets a huge gap between Amy and me :)

This point system was too complicated for me, I guess I'm about as smart as Amy :p

Isamu I RP'ed CE.

So I was prue EVIL. Hopefully tried to create a big threat to Avlis..... Kinda failed in that but PC is no reflection on the player. Probably I lost heart in him and gave up, was due to I felt guilty when someone had a whine about him. Weather I was in the wrong or right I could'nt shake that feeling.

So answer to that no... PC was a evil little shit, where I am.... Well some of you know what I am like in RL.

Ony though is more similar to me.... Just nuts... RPed a PC that I could relate to and find it less stressfull to RP. I don't agree with steeling, smacking someone up because they said your a idoit.

Ony is probably the closest to me as a person. But only a little..... I tried to act a PC concept out and not let my OOC personality work into my RP.

Its a hard task to do..... :P

I scored myself a 13 for Zatiel. Our personalities are pretty similar, but she's a jock while I'm an intellectual, and she's quite religious whereas I'm more of a spiritualist. If those two weren't so opposite, we'd probably score more like 6.

I'm interested to see how this poll shapes up. (Neat idea with the points, Anodynes.)

Let me give an example:

my friend named Bob wants to play a paladin. He wants to do this because he never got to do it in real life. Here is how it stacks up:
1) male vs male 0 points (exactly the same)
2) alignment lawful good vs neutral good... 1 point
3) view on following orders: Bob is in the military and paladins are order bound so 0 points
4) view on religion or divine beings: bob does believe in a god but does not worship, the paladin does. 2 points
5) friendships and social interactions: bob is a loaner. his PC is a socialite... at every gathering and out trying to get people to join the church 3 points
6) follow through: with tasks, duties, goals, motives; keep true to your word: lying/cheating, taking oaths, loyalty, etc. bob and his PC do the same 0 points.
7) use of coins: donating to every charity -or- greedy to the point of robbing the poor blind beggar: Bob never donates... he doesnt even pay taxes. the paladin gives a tithe 3 points
personality: loud and proud vs timid and meek. Bob is a maniac in real life... bold... his PC is bold to get new recruits. 0 points.
9) physical prowness versus mental: are you the physical jock (dex, con and str) or the scholar (cha, int, wis)? Bob and paladin PC are the same physical types... 0 points
10) When there is trouble: do you rally to an ally's side, stand and defend only your own, encourage others to think about leaving, -or- slide out the backdoor abandoning all? Bob and PC both rally to an ally's side 0 points.

total score: 9

You know you can write 8) without getting the sunglasses smily? Just click on the box to disable smilies.

Oh and I got 15 points, between me and Samwir. That's kinda scary.

In the past I have played characters both more and less different than me, Arn scored a 16 on the rating which I guess is middle-of-the-road.

Nice poll, I say! Fun to think about!

Scored 19 for Eldraea.. which is about what I would have expected. She has elements of my personality, but mostly she represents an abstract ideal that I doubt many will ever reach, least of all me ;)

I believe its exceedingly difficult to play a character that dynamically different from yourself for a long time; you probably won't see many long-term characters that are in that 30 point range. Just my oppinion from my experiences.

In case you care, my character, Rellona, ranks about 12 from me.

1. Most of my characters are female - which I am not.
2. Most are CG. I like to feel that I qualify as Good, but in RL, I am probably closer to NG.
3. I have a variety of characters, most of whom are young - which I am not.
4. They include Elves, Halflings, Changelings, a Brownie, several Kobolds - whereas I am Human (honestly, I am).
5. All of my characters have skills which I do not share - spellcasting, moving stealthily, shadowdancing, shapechanging, martial arts, weapons-skills, etc. I have none of these.
6. Most of my characters are played as meaning well, not necessarily that bright and something of a smartarse - some would say that is pretty close to me.

Of course, many of my characters represent aspects which I wish I had in RL - except being female or Kobold, or both.

Not sure what score that gives - but the whole point of playing here is to Roleplay - to portray a character which is not your real self. Who would want to Roleplay an overweight, short-sighted, boring old fart who is a complete wimp?

Edit: I would guess that, on average I would score about 20 with most of my characters.

I worked out a 9 with Fealith. Funny thing is, he seems to have grown a lot more like me with time. I rated him on what he was like 2 years ago and got a 16.

Seems like he's incorporated more of me over the years of playing him. A lot of it is the alignment shift and attitude to authourity.

Ask anyone I game with a lot. All the green text is me, all the white is my character, and I came out at 23. Sometimes I slip, and my char shows more of me, but I try to keep those minimal.

For my Main I went with only a slight difference...mainly in the religous aspect...he follows a god and was a leader of a religous order.

He like to do verbal jabs and off hand comments and has no trouble making his opinion noticed. He's equally comfortable alone or with a group. All these things I am.

I cannot on the otherhand hide in plain sight (I wish) or use weapons equally well with both hands, though I wasn't bad with one hand. Nor am I a proficient archer. I'm wiser than Mel and probably smarter (I would never attack a dragon with a sword under any circumstances :P ).

He's my main and has been for approaching 3 years because he's easy to play since in general conversation I can just be me, more or less.

Interesting poll :D

Approximately 15 here.

Main difference is in religion and approach to general values, ways of achieving stuff and so on...

I lost most points on the life goals (scholar :P) and friends....

Oh, and gender. ;)

11-15

Fergus is quite a bit more patient, understanding, and caring than I am. He's definitely a departure from the usual things I play in PnP, and can be quite a challenge at times.

Awesome poll, BTW :)

11

My main is more of a jock than me, friendlier, more chaotic, follows orders less well (even though he joined the army), donates more to charity, is quite a bit more outspoken than me

Well I'm too lazy to do the whole scoring thingy now bust I guestimated (goddamnit I hate that word.) and picked 6-10.

Because if you look past the blinding beauty and apparant grey hue of my character...

You may just find me. =D

With the indicated catagories, I would score 4 or 5 with my main.

And, no, my main is not Riagrin... he would score a 22.
