Dont leave yet.
With your 15 original strength, at level 4 you could put a point into it, bumping you up to 16, by level 20, you could have 20 str. Then you add your +12 (from items and potions etc) and you could have 32 str at level 20.
By level 40, you could have alot more. (I don't feel like counting) but 35 base (+12 from items potions etc) = 47 str. Which is nothing to scoff about.

ok why is one dm ( the first one to respond) telling me that my max is +12 above my base,which is 15 ( starting strength). He explained that an guy who started out with 18 could get up to 30 strength, which is +12 . Now your telling me that The +12 is what i can on top of this due to items of magic and potions and what not. Which one of you is right ? Or ar both of you right.

Your base is your starting strength + any extra points you put into it as you level up.
You can only have a max of 12 points of temporary stregth boost from things like spells, potions or equipment.
Vrosh and I am saying the same thing, just in different ways. Does this make it clearer?

8 strength that gets added at time of leveling up and gets added to your base stat.
Another way of finding out the base stat is to strip totally naked, then rest to make sure all spells and effects are removed from you. If you examine yourself at this point you should not see the strength increased icon.
Once you are totaly without equipment and temporary effects, check your character sheet. Your strength should be listed in white, not green, and not red. That is your base strength.
Now you can add gear potions spells or anything else you can find, but your max strength will never go higher than 12 points above that base value.
If at any time you get a boost to your base str through adding a point in the lvl up process or by taking a class that gives a stat boost your base str will increase. Once that happens you can repeast this process again to find out your new base stat. Once again, your max is 12 points above your new base value.

ahh i got it now
I think i know where things went wrong. I guess i should of made my question of whats the max strength this " whats the max strength for when you level up your character" I guess its a good thing i found out the +12 strength that you can go above your base strength, cause i didnt know that. All i really wanted to know is if i can get my guys strength up to 30 without any potions, spells or magical items. Especially since my guy started with a 15 strength.

Re: i guess i didnt understand everything previously
I think you have to state what you're looking to do with this 30 strength. The reason I say that is depending on what you want it for, the answer of how to get there, and how fast you can get there varies.downsystem wrote:ok why is one dm ( the first one to respond) telling me that my max is +12 above my base,which is 15 ( starting strength). For example. Lets say you're a level 1 character with str of 15. You want a strength of 30 so you can take epic feats that require a minimum BASE Strength of 30. In that case, the +12 to your base does not help you at all because it is only temporary, and does not apply to having the requirements for feats.
What you would need to do in order to get a 30 BASE. is the following:
Level 4: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 16
Level 8: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 17
Level 12: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 18
Level 16: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 19
Level 20: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 20
Level 21: Epic Feat -> Greater Strength -> 21
Level 24: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 22
Level 24: Epic Feat -> Greater Strength -> 23
Level 27: Epic Feat -> Greater Strength -> 24
Level 28: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 25
Level 30: Epic Feat -> Greater Strength -> 26
Level 32: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 27
Level 33: Epic Feat -> Greater Strength -> 28
Level 36: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 29
Level 36: Epic Feat -> Greater Strength -> 30
This would give you 1 Epic Feat with the Base Strength at 30.
Now, if you only needed your Strength to be 30 temporarily, then you can use the +12 max to base to help get you there much faster.....
Level 4: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 16
Level 8: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 17
Level 12: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 18
At level 12, you'd have a base of 18, and between items, potions, spells, rage, etc, you got a +12 strength, you would have a 30 strength while you're playing. But if you wanted to take a feat that required a 21 strength, you couldn't because the BASE of 18 is used.
When increasing your BASE strength on gaining a level, there is no cap, just the limit of hte number of gains in ability scores & epic feats you can take. When increasing your overall strength with items, magic, etc, there is a cap of +12

funny
thats how i origionally thought everything was but the guy responded first to my last thread made it sound like told me about the +12 max so that i could only get to 27 with a 15 and maybe i didnt read it right, but i dont think he specified that he was talking about modifiers about potions,spells and items, which wasnt something i cared about to much. So that kind of through me off. I just wanted to make sure i could get to thirty strength through level strength adjustmants with my character build. It is cool to know that i could hit 42 strength with the +12 potions, spells, and items. Which will give me more incentive for trying to build my character up to 30 str. thanks got it all figured out now. thanks ya all.

I always thought that you didn't get a bonus ability point at 20 for some reason. Well I guess I will find out soon enough as my character should be hitting L20 fairly soon (hopefully!).croton wrote:Level 20: +1 Ability -> Strength -> 20

Great - I remember seeing a chart (I think it might even have been on the NWN manual or web site) which showed that you didn't get an ability point at L20. It has been so long since I have played the OC that I really could not rememberAlric wrote:Yo do get an ability point at level 20.Kareth wrote:I always thought that you didn't get a bonus ability point at 20 for some reason.
