Just about to start playing Avlis... Character advice?
Just about to jump in to the world of Avlis... I have practically no experience of online gaming, and although I have lots of pnp experience, it is a long way (6-7 years) in the past.
I've got a whole bunch of chracters developed (I enjoy creating characters - not the numbers - I love creating the background, to the extent that one of the chracters below I have started a book for my own pleasure - I doubt it'll ever get published)
Anyway, to those of you who know online gaming, and especially to those of you who know the Avlis world, which characters sound like they would be playable for a newbie player and would fit in well with the Avlis world as it stands now....
1. Insane (psychotic, split personality) assassin. (Loads of background, the one I have started a book about, but probably to difficult for me to roleplay properly now)
2. Lawful Good, completely pacifist female healer cleric (could such a character survive/succeed in Avlis?)
3. Human sorceror. Worked as a merchant. Hid his ability until middle age when his kids were abducted, has now become an adventurer hoping to find them.
3. Half Orc Druid.
4. Lovesick human archer
5. Halfling priest of thieves (female)
6. Dwarven City Guard/Investigator type
7. Human Swashbuckler, High dex/cha rapier/shortsword type (cliche!)
I am going to start as the lovesick human archer 'cos he is the simplest to play and reasonably survivable, but which do you feel would bring the most to Avlis?
I have reasonably detailed backgrounds for each, which brings me to another question.
On another server there was a policy of giving characters XP if there was a background posted for them on the boards. Each hundred words or so was worth 50 XP up to a max of 1000 XP (DM's discretion). It was a good way to get quickly to 2nd level without doing lots of piddly quests and meant most people had a properly fleshed out character. Is there any chance of that happening here?[/b]

I RP alot with everyone I meet on Avlis and have seen many many druids of all races... they're awesome characters (heavy wilderness/forests), BUT, the cities are HUGE too, and of course most of the "people" and characters are there usually, even if just refillin the quivers so-to-speak... anyway, the most important thing to remember is: If you RP it well enough in game, any character will work, but if I was you, stay away from the assassins and CE types for you first character...
I think your merchant would be coolio, and would work great.
This post is old, so you probably have already decided played, died, decided again, played, died, etc...
I would love to find out what you chose!
Also, unless you're asleep when i'm awake, if you see me online, i'd be glad to show you around Avlis!
Send "TSuomaa" a tell sometime... he needs new friends bigtime!
Cheers.

Actually the servers have been down most of the time, so I haven't been on yet.
The few times they have been up I have been unable to log on, but I haven't had an opportunity to work out why yet!!
Anyway, next question...
If I were to play the "Halfling priest of thieves" what God would I be looking at as a likely one to worship? I don't particularly see this character as evil or destrective so Verossa and Angadar seem wrong...
Vorin seems like a possibility... Maybe more of a rogue/fence/fixer than an active thief? Still not quite right though...
Forian seems a little bit too random but is a possibility
Berryn is the halfling god, but seems to have little affinity with rogues from what I have read...
Advice anyone?

Berryn would definitely not be inclined towards theives... More of a Nature/Goodness oriented goddess...
IMHO, Neutral or Evil Thieves in general in Avlis would seem to gravitate towards Valok... Personal gain and such... I'm sure there are other opinions as well...
When it comes to Good rogues (not Thieves..) Dru'el would probably be first choice, maybe even Dra'Nar.
Usually if you are going to play a cleric, it will be easier to pick one of the greater dieties, that way there will most likely be an established temple somewhere and other followers of that god as well. There are many minor dieties though, so there is full range of choice...

Sorry, the archaeologist in me strikes again.
Just found it amusing/interesting to see Fifty, whom I consider one of the more knowledgable folk around here, as a newbie.
Talk about character development.

Heh.. the survival has been proven now, so if you still want to roll up option 2..JollyOrc wrote:dunno about lawful good, but Janur da Medican is pacifist, and survives for now...Fifty wrote:2. Lawful Good, completely pacifist female healer cleric (could such a character survive/succeed in Avlis?)

we-ell... strictly speaking, he would still be alive if he had stuck to his initial mindset (you know, the not-killing anyone pacifist part).Wyrmwing wrote:Heh.. the survival has been proven now, so if you still want to roll up option 2..JollyOrc wrote:dunno about lawful good, but Janur da Medican is pacifist, and survives for now...Fifty wrote:2. I want to point out by the way, that Fifty hasn't really made his main character in the spirit of any of the points on his list.
Laen was my main character for about 7 or 8 months though. Kered was supposed to be an alt and just kinda took over.
Laen is the lovesick human archer. He still is, in fact, but now he is more hung up on his guilt about deeds he unknowingly did at level 6 and 7.
If I were a newbie now I would play number 2 and be a cleric of Cha'reth, but it did not seem to fit at the time.
The halflnig priest of thieves idea has evolved into Selwonk Sirch, who is a gnomish priest of Vorin with some rogue levels. The Indiana Jones of the gnome world. He includes some elements of number 3.
I made no. 7, the Swashbuckler, Aleksandr Voltaire, but he is now no longer in my Avlis vault. 3 months ago he still existed on Hala.

I've played a pacifist character for some time, my first character on Avlis.
He was a wizard, but ended up among the Healer's of Cha'reth(mostly thanks to Eldraea
, though he was Cha'reth aligned from lvl 1, and his first feat was skill focus: Heal) . He was fun to play, but in the end I grew bored with him because I felt I had limited my options by making him a pacifist(couldn't really go adventuring, couldn't accompany anyone going adventuring if they intended to kill along the way.)
I'm having trouble settling for a new char to replace him, I keep changing my mind because I've so many char concepts I'd like to try out, much like you. So I won't be the one to give any kind of advice
