How many of you play PnP DnD. Also, which version?

Hey guys, I've recently reapplied to Avlis. I was a member about two years back, maybe less...I can't really remember as it has been quite a while. I used to make maps for the community and my bard character would write songs and poems. If you remember me, say hi! I'm back now.

Anyhow, I just wanted to know if any of you guys actively play PnP DnD as of now. Also, if yes, tell us which version.

Awesomeness! I play DnD 3e, but I started with the original DnD advanced rules.

I haven't had alot of time for it lately, but I'm into 2nd Ed still. I'm looking over my books to get some friends into a new campaign. Long live 2nd Edition!

I haven't played PnP for probably about 12 years. I started with redbox, then played 2nd ed. Toward the end, I mostly played in the Dragonlance and Dark Sun campaigns.

Wow PNP its been a long time. I started out with the basic set. The first module I remember playing was B2 Search into the Unknown. I still have quite a bit of my old stuff in storage, that would be fun to break it out sometime and play like mad

Isn't it one of the weirdest feelings to go back after a while of absence and look through your books, old characters, and/or campaigns? Jesus, I did that a while back and I was freaking out!

Also: how do I go about getting my old character back, if he is still in the archive, that is. I think his name was "Hinkus", but I may be wrong.

First of all welcome back to Avlis - you'll notice things have changed and grown since you last played.

There is a restore request thread here - simply list your Gamespy and PC name and the Team will see what they can do, if your character is still in the vault that is.

Finally, at the risk of dating myself here, I used to kick it old school with the original DnD (redbooK

) and 2nd Edition, but I don't PnP anymore since the old gaming group has lost touch and moved away.

Started out 2nd edition, then ran a Star Wars campaign for a large number of years, now DMing a 3.5 PnP every other Sunday afternoon.

I stopped playing PnP back in 96 or 97, haven't done any serious PnP games since... Got tired of being ropped into running games, because I was the one with the most sourcebooks.

Used to do 2nd edition just a few times. Did 3rd edition table-top more times than I can count, both as DM and player. I liked playing better than DMing though. Never tried 3.5 edition.

Personally, I find DMing much more enjoyable and rewarding. I get to play all sorts of interesting NPCs each with their own cool little history, I get to create and tell fun stories, I can toy with my players' emotions

, and best of all, while they're all chomping at the bit for two weeks, waiting for the next game session, I get to keep on playing when-ever I want to - there are always more NPCs to write stats/background for, more plot-hooks to come-up with, more dungeons and castles to map out, more scene descriptions to write, and more music to pick out. A DM's job is never done, and to me, there's no greater feeling than knowing that I am the direct cause of the enjoyment and satisfaction that 5 other people get from playing my game. One of my players once told me that I was the best DM he'd ever had. I say this not to brag, but because it's probably the most meaningful compliment I have ever received (and this one chick called me her stallion once, so that's sayin' somethin' about my priorities

).

Then again I haven't DMed on Avlis, so who knows? It might be nicer here. What really put me off about DMing was having work loads to do (like do x many quests per week, DM for x hours a week, etc.) that were way too tight. Like the last server I DMed on had something like a 2 quest per week requirement each of which had to last at least 4 hours with a total amount of hours coming up to around 8... It's not that I couldn't manage it, but you had to log everything aswell with exact times players dates, etc. That really annoyed me...

Anyway, basically I'd rather play the game than DM. Though right now I can't do either because I'm waiting on the custom character golem to get working

It was almost 20 years ago when I last picked up a real d20 and a Player's Handbook!

In those days, it was called Advanced Dungeon & Dragons (AD&D) - not entirely sure how that fits in with the modern rules.. 2nd edition I guess?

I've been playing PnP DnD for a long time now. Since I was 9 or 10 IIRC. My friend had some old DnD sourcebooks, they were 1st edition. We played a bit and went looking for more sourcebooks.

bout a year or 2 later we found a plethora of 2nd ed books. We scrapped our old characters and started the whole campaign over in 2nd ed. That one went on for a few years, I think we finally made the switch to 3.0 and 3.5 about a year after it was released.

Again, it was pretty hard to convert our current characters and campaign setting to 3.0 but we managed somehow. We went out and bought every 3.0 and 3.5 book we could get our mangey hands on. My friend Jon even pimped a few sourcebooks from Waldenbooks

some of my friends still play 2nd edition, I swing both ways now. I DM 2nd ed games for my old friends and DM 3.5 for the new players we have. I like 3.5 a lot but still enjoy the old system at times. I love DnD cuz its fun and helps me relax with my friends. We all have a ball.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons was Second Edition. Some of the sourcebooks said 2nd ed on them and some didnt.

IT went like this:

Dungeons and Dragons (with original Temple of Elemental Evil and some other sets I cant remember)
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Second Edition (stuff like dragonlance, planescape, birthright, red steel, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and a LOT of others

)
Dungeons and Dragons 3.0 edition (they remade all of the old 2nd ed settings and even some newer ones like Ghostwalk, Ebberon, and some others I cant remember)
Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 edition (the supposedly last installment of DnD changes and additions to the rules. oh yeah, and they came out with revised Unearthed Arcana, more editions to Encyclopedia Arcana, and a massive ammount of supplementary material. )

Im a DnD geek, hands down. I have most all of the stuff listed up there. Maybe one day I will take a picture of all my sourcebooks and post them in a thread called "DnD Nerds/Geeks- What we do with our time"

PS: Does anyone remember that old RPG called Rifts? I got all these sourcebooks lying around that my friend gave me. I used to play it, but dont know anyone else that does. If someone still plays it and they want like 30 books from the game let me know.

Started with the DnD Red box starter kit and went from there. I am actually playing in my PnP 3.5 ed campaign today.

Can't wait! we are going to Myth Drannor and I have been always wanted to campaign there.

It's interesting how the Yes's and No's are about equal.

I found that the amount of work I was putting into my pantheon as a DM, was becoming harder and harder to tolerate. This was about 6 years ago. This coincided with the release of the first really good online RPG's (term used loosely...) like EQ, and later NWN.

Now, I can't imagine spending all that time with stacks of maps and paper and character sheets. Too much damn work for us older folks. They say time is a commodity nowadays...
