Website Moving

Post by Manuel the White » Sat Feb 05, 2005 1:59 am

About 3 weeks ago, we hit the wall. Our current host simply can't support our high resource demands any longer. So, avlis.org will be moving to a new host. The website address will not change. We will be residing on dedicated server rather than a shared environment that we currently suffer. In addition, we will have full control over how the web server is configured and what services to provide. For security reasons, that's all the details the Team will provide about the new host and setup.

It was one of our community members who has donated the use of his dormant, dedicated server for Avlis use. I'm not going to embarass him by giving out his name. Perhaps he'll tip his hat to you all if you post enough "Thank you's" below. He surely knows that I appreciate it!

So, how big have we gotten? Here's a general idea..

272 new posts avg a day
230,000 hits avg per day
5.5 million hits avg a month
20+ gigs of data transferred (of web content not haks) avg a month
8 new registerd users avg a day
70+ countries accessing us
600 megs database size
12+ million records

It is the last 2 that are bringing us down. Our database continues to grow exponentially. We are not given enough database connections, CPU cycles or memory by our host to read through such a large data store given the amount of traffic we endure. It is essential that we migrate NOW because historically, this is not our busy season. That time of year comes in Summer.

There will be a period of forum outage while the enormous database is migrated. It may take up to 24 hours to complete. I will post a final warning about when this will happen and try to give as much advance notice as possible. The last migration I did a year ago went quite smoothly. Let's hope that this one follows suit.

Wooo hooo!

Can we please ritually burn the old server afterwards and dance around it? Pretty please? :D

Start making your forum accounts over on copap.org. You can use that forum for however long we are down.
