Epic Spells

Post by Drysh » Thu Dec 23, 2004 5:15 am

Could anyone explain me how should the epic spells work in PnP?

- How should a mage learn them?

- How many should be cast per day?

- Examples. Some epic spells and the requirements.
Cheers.

* You learn them by taking the Feat

* You cast them like normal spells: either from the radial or in a quickslot

* Every epic spell feat can only be taken once, and the spell can only be cast once per day...in essence it's a 1/day special ability gained.

* Examples: see your HotU manual. In general, they require you to be 21+ level caster (some are arcane caster only, most are for all pure casters), and require a number of ranks in spellcraft varying from 21 to 30 i believe.

* Bards cannot learn epic spells, despite what the manual says.

In D&D bards can learn epic spells.

To clarify, in PnP a caster needs to take the feat Epic Spellcasting, which requires 24 ranks in Spellcraft, 24 ranks in Knowledge (Arcana, Religion or Nature) and the ability to cast level 9 spells. Given enough time and the investment of several feats in Improved Spell Capacity, any caster can meet those requirements, including not only bards but paladins and rangers as well. After that, you can develop your own epic spells and they require a investment of time, gold and xp but you do NOT have to spend feats to learn epic spells.

I'm studying a way to bring them closer to PnP. Maybe Doug likes it and decides to use (I hope so). But I need to know how they should be.

Well.. Let me try to translate what we have so far to NWN engine:

- You should use a single feat that requires (since we don't have knowledge) lore 24, spellcraft 24, and the ability to cast 9th level spells, and be an epic mage, sorcerer or bard. (questions: should palemaster, arcane archer, or red dragon disciple be able to take that feat as well? And should it be open to any epic character with 9th level spells?)

- To learn an epic spell you will need to spend gold, xp and time. So that should be a DM quest to unlock the epic spell. There shouldn't be possible to learn an epic spell just by selecting it when you level up.

I still need to know:
How many epic spells may be used per day?
Are there any other requirements to create an epic spell?
Are they suposed to have ill effects to the caster when used?
Cheers.
