Testers needed for new servers

Post by PlasmaJohn » Fri Oct 22, 2004 3:17 am

Help me out and give the test server a beatdown. Look for "[test] Ferrell" and "[test] Wilderness" in Gamespy... Player password is the regular ones with "Test" prepended. (eg. if the normal password is "Xyzzy" then the test one is "TestXyzzy")

Thanks,
John

If test servers are using the actual avlis servervault, aren't they eating up resources for the rest of the servers? Or is that part of the idea, to see what this pipe can handle?

If you're just wanting to check out code make em local, I've been wanting to actually kick those orc's asses for eons now. :x

I helped out! Not in fighting the constant waves of monsters of course, just being there and taking up space like I usually do. That's where my skills are!

what exactly should we do when testing and what should we report back? I've been on for almost an hour, picked fights with everybody, did some crafting and got bored...
All seemed fine though, perhaps somebody can throw a event on the test servers with free vorpal blades for everyone? would make stuff a bit more interesting :D

The "Event" was last night and learned nomatter what I did Dragons just laugh at me. Oh and I would like to petition now that Orc Brawlers be Banned from Avlis! . At least you now know Ferrell can handle 500+ loot drops on the screen at once :) . What a hoot!

Yah, that amber dragon, weakest of the avlissian ones, pretty much laughed at everybody. And the orcs? Those are Ferrell natives ;)

Thanks for the help guys. I don't anticipate the cutover to happen for at least 10 hours and more testing would be appreciated. A large CvC (warzone?) would be a nice test

Not sure if you'll still want testers when I get home and can play (about 8 hours time), but just wanted to clarify what exactly you'd like us to test (besides the warzone thing), and to ensure that whatever happens there won't impact our "live" characters at all??

Maybe time for "Aradan the Reaver" to make an appearance

Stress testing mostly. I want to see how well the servers hold up. Different machines, slightly different OS (still winders based), db server and servervault on a Linux box, etc.
... and to ensure that whatever happens there won't impact our "live" characters at all??
Yup, this is just scratch data. Once we're into cutover, I'll trash the temp vault and the database and reinstall from the current ones.

ok - If I manage to get time earlier than expected, I'll give it a go.

Just as an aside - what would be the chance of a permanent one-way portal to a test server, where there's no rules, no consequences, no anything? Might be nice for people that want to let off some steam, without them having to leave Avlis / take a break. If people want to try some things OOC (like duels, new weapons etc) which they couldn't justify in Avlis, they could do it there. Just a thought.

I tested to ping this test server. It lets you ping directly as these old servers(servers which are in daily use) does not. Is this just temporally or will there be more optimized/installed/tweaked firewall? Because this means you can make the server lag without even getting IG.

I haven't got enough time yet to join in tho, but latencies looked in gamespylist quite the same(perhaps these new machines will eat up the lag spikes, packet loss and all that).

Around 130-150ms for me(Damned Finland, I have around here just 18ms latency). So I'm happy. :P

It is possible, but a very low priority, and to be honest, doesn't contribute to the development or stories of Avlis, which are really our focus. So I doubt it will ever happen, sorry.

It was empty when I logged on as DM earlier, but I still managed to crash it by blowing up 100+ Ferrell minks with a hellball. 8)

Well I had a very nice time there last night, curse you for making me sleep deprived.- :D

If you do go there bring something to get that dratted Amber Dragon. and just run from the Orc Brawlers. :D

I would like to thank the person player the mass healer..I forgot your characters name, but you kept Bregg chopping on that Dratted Amber Dragon well beyond the point of where she would have died many times.

As for the Army of Troll Besekers, well Bregg can only kill so many at one time. :D Next time we have choose a better location so the healers can not be flanked., but there was so many of them.... :D

Aha! It wasn't the despawner, after all... hehehe. :)

Odd that should crash the server though. I've done as bad on the live servers before, as a DM. Hells, I've done as bad with a PC, possibly. * thinks back on Cha'reth's visits to the FoM and grins *

It's pretty heavy for the server to calculate all the damages. Hellball does a variety of different damages at once and then it fires an OnDeath event for them to boot. When it goes off you can literally see the creatures die in "groups" from inside out; in the order they are processed. Fortunately there's no way you can spawn that many creatures in any one Avlis area from encounters, let alone give them all enough damage to kick the bucket. It would be lag central and the cause of many a servercrash.

Hmmm, well I killed the Gamespy watchdog although I'm beginning to think you're right about it crashing instead of being killed. Try it again and see if it survives this time ;)

I went on the Test Ferrell last night. got killed a wwhole bunch of times by hordes of uber spawns. After it crashed and i logged back on the death script picked up and gave me dupes of everything in my inventory! I was sorting for about 20 minutes before I was done. That itself could be a stress test. But all those loot bags, WOW. Ive never seen so much before in my character's whole career, there was just so many.

I had fun, might go on the wilderness one tonight :)

I didn't bother joining the army. A Nanshi soldier shot me with an arrow so I went and stabbed a few hundred elves in the back and let them bleed.
