Avlis Downtime: 10/15-10/16

Post by Jordicus » Wed Oct 13, 2004 2:04 pm

This weekend, there will be some sporadic downtime Friday and Saturday. Hopefully if all goes well it might be as short as a few hours.

Allow me to be the first to say

WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

O cant wait to play on the servers once the move is done and perhaps finally be able to go out aadventuring again without fear of losing half my gear to a server lag spike due to a mage casting spells

just an FYI: you might not necessarily see any dramatic improvement immediately.

The simple reason is this. In order to keep the downtime to a minimum, we are going to initially swap the servers to different machines, and then do maintenance on the current ones. Then we will slowly work at the redistribution of the server load.

call me a fucking noob on server moving, but what exactly will be different?

I hear a lot off less server lag *prays to the avlis staff a prayer of thanks*.

Just wondering if anything else would change

*prepares for serveral hours of avlis withdrawal....aaahhhhhh*

Great that the moving can be done in such a short ammount of time. I, and probably on the behalf of much, thank you all :D :D

Edit: funny how these posts get replied to so fast that one post will be awnsered by the time i submit..(1 min..?)

I assume you aren't doing the 1.64 patch at the same time as that would cause too many potential problems...

Good luck anyway though

I'm sure you were going to, but please could you do an in-game server announcement before they go down, to give people time to log off cleanly.

thanks ... and hope it goes well !! :D

's not the outage... it's the lack of mini-outages that are likely after this one.

I'll cheer to that!

Well, mini-outages can still happen. Sometimes it takes some time for us to notice them.

Extended outages should be far less likely unless it's due to some true catastrophe. The garage structure is detached and keys have been given to Jord, Silk and Orl, so there's no need to coordinate with anybody if physical access is needed. In an effort to reduce the need even for that, I've acquired remote reboot hardware and will have dialup modem access for the admin staff.

The big advantage that the new room offers us is a 100Mbit LAN connection to my client, no, wait...

Seriously, what we gain is the ability to add additional machines. We've got six mods on three machines with one of those also hosting the server vault, the MySQL database and AutoBIC process. Getting the services on thier own machine is a priority as is moving the mods to their own exclusive machines.

There are other related projects in the works, so stay tuned. But, in the short term, other than having to connect to a different IP (until the domain updates), you'll probably not see a real big change (crossing my fingers).

Perfect timing as far as I am concerned. I'll be working all week-end so dear team members you can take all your time to move the servers. 8)
