Current Avlis Downtime

Post by Orleron » Tue Sep 28, 2004 6:30 pm

As of now, we do not know why the servers keep going up and down. Likely it is the modem having problems, and hopefully it is something that a reset can fix. Unfortunately, since my kids were born, my relationship with my in-laws, who keep the servers at their house, has decayed. Simply put, they are being uncooperative and taking their dear old sweet time resetting the modem. Since I am at work and busy with other things, I have not had time to reset it myself. (I also do not really wish to go over there and deal with those freaks either.)

So, for anywhere from the next 5 minutes to the next 5 days, be prepared for lots of up/down time. The good news is that we are moving the servers very soon. All we are waiting for is the cable internet service to go live at the new location.

Some advice:

1) If the servers are down, have a look at the other CoPaP worlds. Maybe even start some new characters there.

2) If you do not like that idea, ask an Avlis Team member to set up some kind of knock-around fun server. (Fight club anyone?)

3) If you can help it, never marry into a family with a schizophrenic, selfish, evil mother-in-law and a paranoid father-in-law.

Who you hope really have absolutely NO interest in what you do and don't read your forums ;)

Thanks for the update and good luck with the situation.

I have enough coworkers in similar situations that I understand your pain, even if I don't feel it. I like my inlaws more than my own parents. I solved the parent problem by moving thousands of miles away to another country.

Just a thought.

Thanks for putting up with it for all of us man. It must be wearing a bit thin for them though I suppose. Any room in the kitty for some flowers for her from all of us? Maybe some anti-psychotics for him - i mean a bottle of wine perhaps...? :D

Telll them the server needs to be reset because it was accidentally connected to the closest power supply and will burn the house down if no voltage exists between this power supply and the system !

At least the paranoid one might believe ya

Let's also hope:

a) Orleron's wife doesn't mind Orleron expressing said statements about her parents

or

b) Orleron's wife doesn't read these boards at all

They don't read these boards. And if they did, I have three words:

Bring it on.

ROFLAO

But really, I am in a similar situation with "Crazy In-Laws", Only they aren't just crazy they are stupid to boot. I feel you pain, I really do. I also have a kid myself and know that that can really put a damper in anything that you want to do. (dirty diapers anyone?)

Just wait till they get older man, that's when the fun really starts.
My son is 2 years old and I love him to death, but when he resets my computer when Im playing on Avlis, I can just about scream bloody murder. He doesnt know any better even when we tell him "NO NO. Get away from daddy's computer!"

But anywho, congrads (a little late) on your offsprings birth into this sick sad world. And thanks for the heads up on the 'Upcoming Downtime' Thats just too funny.

There's a very simple solution to this problem.

1. Tape aluminum foil to the cover of the power/reset buttons.
2. attach wire with alligator clip to said aluminum foil
3. connect wire to a switch and then to an appopriate low voltage power source
4. turn switch on
5. watch kid learn VERY fast not to touch the computer buttons

And if you do marrying into a family like that, don't live to close to them.

3 hours drive sounds like it would help, but it is not enough.

Hey Orleron, I feel for you. Since my son has been born, I have had very little time to do much of anything. Also, sorry about the in-laws. You should meet mine sometime. Anyway, thank you for all the work you do.

I'm lucky i guess- the only persons in my boyfriends family who are still sane are his parents. And if I ever have to leave my server and connection with the rest of his family, I'll ho hair kiri myself. :p

I'm lucky too... my in-laws are cool, relaxed people.. is my own mother that is somewhat psycho. My pa is pretty cool, and handy with doing all those DIY jobs I never get around to doing. Luckily for me his dad did all his, so he feels it is the way it should be done, heh.

Is good and bad though, having married into a big family... more people to buy gifts and shit for at Xmas and birthdays, but then you get more back too.

Was my daughters 2nd birthday and she got about 3 times as many cards and gifts as me! Most beneficial that she and her sister are the first of the next generation... they get LOOOOOADS of gifts... saving me a fortune :D

They are pretty good with babysitting and such, as they are 4 miles away... far enough to not see them, but close enough so they can be called on when needed

Will have a beer in your honour, Orl *salutes*

The first time i visited my wifes pearents my future mother in law introduced me to my future father in law as the man of the three 'v's, a vodka drinking, virgin vicar ...who also hated swearing.....three hours after being introduced and biting his lip every time he wanted to swear he twigged the joke.....guess i'm lucky. :D

Yep, Classical Behavioral Conditioning. It would be a nice touch though , if the kid also starts drooling all by itself when it hears Avlis sounds.

*Nerd mode on* Pavlov was the one who came up with classical conditioning theory while doing research on the digestive system with dogs. The poor baby you're talking about is Little Albert, and his tormentor was John Watson. *Nerd mode off*
