New character/Player to Avlis (eep!)

Post by Auron » Tue Sep 14, 2004 8:53 pm

Hi this will be my first full roleplay experience (which I'l do my best not to look to nooby at :)) and I was wondering if anyone could send some advice my way to do with character creation.

As it stands my character will be called Velek Auron, and be a half elf ranger.

Valek grew up in the forest with a family of elves, always trying to pitch for a more adventurous life, but sheltered by his father from the outside world. His mother died at the age of 2, and to this day he can not remember her face.
It soon became apparent though to him that he was 'different' to his friends and family. His features were darker, and rougher than his father, and he quickly out grew them in height. He was the outcast of the elvish families he knew, and never found his place.
Once, on one of his regular strolls around the forest he decided that he was going to find the edge of the forest, and the boundary his father had warned him to avoid. He bid his father farewell and set off on an adventure. After days of walking, he found it. Beyond his home was a world to explore, and all sorts of people lived there, not just elves, but dwarfs, gnomes, and humans. It was then he realised finally what he was, a half-elf half-human hybrid, outcast to all.

Now what I'm mainly asking, is this sort of character, too much of a 'basic' character, 'tried and tested' idea? Obviously this being my first jump into Avlis, I want a character which isn't too hard to roleplay, but which holds some interest in his personality.

A human fighter I would probably say would be the hardest to roleplay due to the fact that its hard to be original enough to create an interesting personality and backstory for one. Whilst an Orc mage requires less of an ability to write backplot for and more of an acting skill to pass off. So I'm trying to strike a happy balance between the two.

So in short any suggestions for improvements, etc. Is this character to overly played, or does it strike a balance I'm looking for?

First, welcome to Avlis! :)

Second, hrm. Half-elves aren't really all that outcast in most places in Avlis, and T'Nanshi (the home of the elves) tends to be pretty racially tolerant. Sure, there's some bitterness due to the war, but otherwise the elves and humans get along fine. However, being an "outcast" can be a completely internal thing - knowing that you're different can be enough to make you withdraw a bit, which in turn can cause you to feel more of an outsider, etc. There's surely nothing wrong with wanting to play a half-elf who doesn't feel he fits in anywhere. That even provides you with a good initial goal: find some friends, or a home, or both.

These are just some random thoughts - you should do what's going to be fun for you. Ultimately, I'd suggest with your first character that you not overplan at first - the world might very well surprise you, and you might find your character going in entirely different directions than you initially expected. So perhaps the best advice I could give in this case is "stay open to whatever seems fun, and let your character develop as life happens to him". :)

Welcome to Avlis, and make sure you read the player's guide. There are a lot of information there for beginning roleplayers. :)

Thanks Aloro. Hehe, I tend to overplan everything, so sooner I'm ingame the better :D I took the idea of being a half-elf outcast from the nwn manual which says: "they are outsiders among both cultures", but I kind of over looked Avlis being so tollerent of them :o

And thanks for the suggestion choraldances, but I'm one step ahead having devoured both guides on the website :P hehe
