Can someone please tell me what mighty means.. thnx

Post by chupacabra » Wed Jul 14, 2004 4:34 pm

I have looked at a bow labeled
short bow +1, mighty +3

What does this mean? Does it mean If i have a strength bonus, then it would apply up to 3 additional points of damage to each arrow that strikes?

And, if this is true... and I also have weapon finesse which in theory allows me to use my dexterity bonus in lieu of my strength bonus then would I be able to get my dex bonus as additional damage?

Confused...

That is exactly what it means.
weapon finesse which in theory allows me to use my dexterity bonus in lieu of my strength bonus then would I be able to get my dex bonus as additional damage
Weapon Finesse only allows Dex to replace Str for the attack, not for the damage.

Typically, bows do not allow you to use your strength modifier when calculating damage on a successful hit. A "mighty" bow, allows extra damage based on strengh up to a certain degree.

In your example above, +3, that means that if you have a strength modifier of +1 to +3, it will be added in. That bow is "capped" at +3, so even if you had a 40 strength, the bow can only "handle" +3.

As for Weapon Finesse, that is only for certain melee weapons and only applies to your chances "to-hit". It does not affect your damage whatsoever.

Your dex bonus is also what you use to calculate your pluses "to-hit" with any ranged weapon.

Tharliss! You have given yourself away by your use of the term "to-hit" You are a second edition AD&D player!!! All my 3e buddies get confused how I keep saying "to-hit" bonus instead of attack bonus. And never try to explain the concept of "THAC0" to them... Their brains will explode... Messy.

As to your weapon finesse feat, it applies to faster weapons, rapiers, short swords, daggers, hand axes. I am not sure if kukris are in that category. those who posted above are correct, it applies to your attack bonus and not damage bonus.

Don't forget the off-hand for double weapons. (like dire maces)

Finesse works on the off-hand in this case.

All double weapons.

But only the off hand

So in most cases that's a single attack with finesse.

A level 20 ranger would have 4 attacks without finesse, and two with. As would a similar level fighter with improved two weapon fighting.

Still, nice bonus.

Just need a double weapon that lets one use finesse for all attacks.

Where is the double rapier?

My favorite was getting players to roll all of the various saving throws for each and every item they carried when attacked by something like dragons breath... if you remember there is a chart for different item types in the old Tri-Fold 'dungeon masters screens' --

everything from glass, to magic items... metals to woods and cloths... all had a number you had to roll in order to avoid having them **POOF** into flames or acid or what have you.

Good Bye Uber Items!

Oh I miss the old ways of PnP... Someone have gear thats too uber? Millions of ways to take/ destroy/ curse/ make useless....
without angering the players. Thats a lot harder in a CRPG where people almost never lose their uber stuff.
