Idiotic question about floating text...

I've noticed that in some screenshots that floating text sometimes appears alongside a character's portrait - is this a hak, or is it a game option I can enable?

A game option... I think it's in Game Options -> Advanced... you can set it to be text only, portrait only, or even remove floaty names. YOu can also tweak the delay.
