Damn crashes! Help!
Well for some reason my nwn has started crashing for no particular reason. I had though it might be the new version of zone alarm firewall doing it, that turned out not to be it. I tried uninstalling the programs i downloaded. Ran norton 2004 on my entire systems to no avail. Anyone eles have this problem and find a fix? Ive already searched the bioware forums with little success as far as a fix is concerened. I would really like to just use a hammer.............
thanks,
Dan
thanks,
Dan

I used to have the same problem. I've retired that PC, that's how I fixed it. But there were a few things that seemed to make the crashes less frequent (like only 10 times a night instead of 25).
1. Don't run zone alarm or any virus software while playing.
2. Defrag your hard drive (I did this once every week or two).
3. Turn off all non-essential background programs.
4. Turn down all the graphics options even though your PC can support some of them.
5. Make sure your hard drive has a bit of free space. I found out at one point mine was nearly full. I removed several programs I didn't use and freed up a lot of room, defragged and it ran better for a while.
My honest suggestion is to give that hammer a try. If it doesn't fix the problem, it gives you the excuse to buy a new PC. I ran like this for a year, it's incredibly aggravating. You have my total sympathy, good luck.

Check video drivers, check biobards for lists of problems with certain versions of drivers with certain cards. Check sound drivers. Disable sound card and play. Seriously, try it for a while, you'd be surprised at how many crashes are due to sound cards/sound drivers.

Fighters do it face to face, Rogues may do it from behind, Rangers can do it from a distance, Wizards do it from out of nowhere, Clerics may not do it at all, Barbarians may do it in a rage, Sorcerers can do it on a whim, Bards on a note, but Paladins have to pay for it!

Another thing that you might look into is clearing out your local vault. There seems to be some instability if you've got a large number of characters in there....like for example...all the possible pre-gen characters that come automatically with the game.
Try using something like WinRAR and compress all the characters you're not using, and store them some other place( ie other than in your NWN folder).

Yeah, I had forgotten about the vid/sound card issue. My sound card in the old machine was so ancient the company no longer supported it. I removed it, used onboard sound and had to manually select a certain sound option in game. I can't recall which one it is at the moment, but I'll double check when I get home. That made a big difference for me. I tried updating the vid card and had even more problems than before. Went through the support song and dance and got no help. So I returned it and just put up with the crashes until I could get a new system. Dan, I really hope you can get this fixed soon. It totally sucks when you crash out while we're in the FoM.Strangg wrote:Check video drivers, check biobards for lists of problems with certain versions of drivers with certain cards. Now his will maybe seem as if it is a rant.
Well, it is!
It's a rant of support !
Why i don't get surprised to hear you have this Norton installed. All these years i see it in the magazines, how good these Norton programs are and how they get always 100/100 , strangely when I install them they F**K UP seriously my computer. The above is tested in 4 different of my computers , newer and older. Someone got to press charges on them , the magazines and the programmers. They are a gang of liers. I have Original programs by Mr Norton and his gang that i deliberately don't use because always they give me instability and general performance issues. Same count for the MCAffee gang. In Ms-Dos MCAffee was not like this, was decent. In windows they both S**K!
Just disable them. I use PC-Cillin 2001 that i update constantly for the simple reason it's reliable ,light and never has created me problems. As a firewall try to use the Sygate ( free downloadable version). Install also Spybot or Adaware 6.0 to clean the data miners. (free as well).
Internet Sweeper (freeware as well) to clean some other stuff that may mess up your PC and try also the Omniquad Myprivacy for the rest (freeware)
