Laptop/Toolset question

Post by Reinstag » Fri Dec 19, 2003 7:23 pm

Okay, I'm getting a laptop soon and I need to know what I should get. I need it to run the toolset but I don't need it to run NWN so I can do area building at work during my *cough* breaks.

I've never bought/shopped for a laptop so I have no clue where to begin.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks.

as long as it has adequete video RAM and regular RAM, you should be fine...

The toolset actually uses as much RAM, Processing Power and Video Card resources as the game does so all you need to do is check the side of the box that NWN came in for the specs.

To use the toolset you don't actually need the disks - which is nice - but if you want to test what you've built you will need the disk from whatever the latest expansion pack you've installed.
Thank goodness Vicky finally gave up that powergamer character, Tehenen. If I saw her one more time at the Ice Caves, I was gonna throw up! Jesus. To go from level 1 to 5 in 8 months is just ridiculous. I bet she has like 4200 gold too. Unbelievable how fast she was gaining levels and wealth. ;)

Don't get one with an ATi card - you can get alternate drivers and workarounds, but NwN will still hate your guts. The toolset has never worked properly on mine... keeps freezing. Hope you have better luck than I.

As a related aside... get one with a good cooling system, and put it in a nice, well ventilated place.

Other than that... laptops rule.

Hi There, I run an IBM T30 with 256MB of RAM and I have no problems running the toolset along with my usual work programs. Believe or not it evens manages to run the NWNX server etc if I need to do testing! It's a little slow but works.

I can second that, when I first got the laptop the ATi card dould deal with everything and more, even 'shiny water'. Then for some unfathomable reason one day it decided to crash whenever it had to load any area with more than one puddle if the 'shiny water' option was enabled.

Not to mention the fact that the bloody thing has crashed several times and each time it's been due to the bloody ATi Radeon Mobility card

So the moral of this story is... as Lyc said... AVOID ATi GRAPHICS CARDS

oh and happy new year :D

Also looking for a new video card myself right now from my current 64mb one, although since money is tight I can only go up to $130. ATI sounds nice but since it does have lots of issues with NWN it doesn't seem like a good idea so any other suggestions would be good.
Vetinari: I have noted before that you have a definite anti-authoritarian streak, Commander.
