In game PM - NWN bug or really good roleplaying?

Post by Gorgon » Fri Dec 19, 2003 3:35 pm

I've had this happen to me a few times now and was wondering if it is a minor bug with NWN or just some really good role playing.

Tried to send a pm by clicking on the characters pic in the chat window but the person had logged off a few minutes ago. Ended up sending the message to a totally different person instead of the usual player not found error. When I try again, I notice the name of the person I am PMing is different than the pic I clicked on. The person I send the message to is totally confused when I do this.

This isn't a big deal since I don't use PMs for IC stuff (except the occasional note or whatever) but the only thing I can see it being is the player using a different character and login name. Every time though, the player doesn't know what I am talking about.

I guess it could also be someone else using a shared computer to play with a different name. Like i said, no big deal, but I was curious if this happens to anyone else.

*edit* I meant to post this in the NWN discussion thread so if someone feels like moving it there, thanx.

It is almost certainly a software "feature" (some people call thos "bugs").

Probably what is happening is that NWN uses some sort of index of "handle" to the player so that it doesn't have to resolve the full name each time. When someone logs out and a new player logs in, NWN can reuse the same "handle", so you end up talking to the wrong person.

Of course, I'm just speculating there, but it sounds like a reasonable cause. In any case it is a NWN thing, nothing anyone can do about it.

Tip: Only click on the picture to do a "tell" if it was not too long ago. If several minutes have passed, then maybe safer to use the player list.

Good idea (though I've had the player log off 2 seconds before I clicked their pic too. Saying goodbyes etc. Bad timing :) )

Even the player list has potential for problems, but it is minor.

If between the time you click on the players name and click the "tell" button, someone else enters or leaves, the selected name changes. Or maybe it's only if the player you've selected leaves, can't remember.

And then you realize it has. No good that is.

Like the time one player was giving advice to another on the best way to hit on Satin... and sent it to Satin by mistake.. oops
