IMHO, DMs have a number of functions - not all of which apply to me.
The ones I hope to do include (not in any order):
1). To help in times of technical difficulties - if you are stuck somewhere because the transition out does not work, send a message to the DM channel. If I am not busy with something else, I will help. Please do not spam the channel or get upset if you don't get an instant reply - even if you are sure I am online as a DM.
2). To watch for, and reward good Roleplay.
3). To watch for, and 'reward' bad Roleplay or worse.
4). To make the Roleplay experience more real and more interesting. If you walk or run past an NPC, then maybe, sometimes, he or she might speak to you. Please respond appropriately. You might just get a few minutes of fun roleplay, you might get a cookie, or it might even develop into some sort of quest. Who knows?
So far, I have done this several times. Some people responded and at least one did not. I don't remember who it was, but next time you are waiting on the boat for dusk and a woman waves goodbye to you - at least wave back.
Life is never as bad as you think it is, although that doesn't help at the time.
