Divination Magic

Post by Gairus » Tue Dec 02, 2003 1:41 am

So, V'heress is a Divination specialist because it fitted his character concept so well.

Unfortunately, it's also the weakest and most pointless thing to specialise in (during low levels at the least, but looks pretty crap up high too beyond true seeing).

I was hoping for some feedback about ways I can make his specialisation interesting to RP, beyond introducing himself as a Diviner. Looks to me like it's a more interesting path in PnP, but for NWN Enchantment would have been far more appropriate :(

Necromancers can go on about dead people, Enchanters can talk about manipulating things, Evokers can show their control over forces... but what can Diviners do? Unfortunately, everything i've thought of woud require cheesing.

Ideas?

EDIT: This sort of thing may be covered in the Mage forum, which I just applied for. Mentioning it so no one picks on me for not searching or somesuch :)

I don't in general like the way NWN does specialization.

I think you've done a good job with signing up for the arcane knowledge expedition. Thats at least a start.

I think I would RP a specializist as really gungho about whatever kind of magic they are dedicated too. Conversely, if you specialize you automatically have a prohibited school. You can RP them being more than less enthused with that kind of magic. For example, I just looked it up and Divinition is paired with Illusion. So you can RP your character as really not giving a damn about illusion magic. Of course, thats reminds me of another thing I don't like about NWN specialization: prohibited schools. I really liked being able to pick what magic schools were prohibited in PNP. Oh well, I guess they had to find some way to simplify the engine.

Additionally, your specialized school appears on your character sheet which means DMs can see it if they open your char sheet. That means they can be aware of your characters "attuneness" to knowing things and fit you into their quest appropriately.

well, I think that probably helps a little. I'm sure some others will come along and help you a lot more.

Ooooh that IS a good start. I was stuck thinking along the lines of "what is he better at".

"What does he care more about" is a better angle.

*ponders*

Easy too... divination is about what will happen/is happening, but illusion is about fudging same.... hrm....

Well... perhaps he could be a fortune teller.

He wouldn't even need to be authentic either!
Charge 100 gold a reading, and just tell everyone they'll die a horribly agonizing death.

Pretty likely here on Avlis, I tell you what.

Maybe he can read the tavern boards all across the world without even leaving his house. ('cause once you visit a place, you can scry there)
