Weird and Phantasmal Killer

Post by Jeffi0 » Thu Nov 13, 2003 8:33 pm

Do these spells effect creatures who are immune to fear? It doesnt say that specifically IIRC, but since they are fear spells and the descriptor for weird is fear (probably for phantasmal too, can't remember) it would make sense for immunity to fear creatures to be immune to these spells.

They are also illusions so you need immunity to those as well.

I think.

Ahh.. hell, I don't know.

I think immunities only count against the school of spell.
Immunity to fear only grants you immunity to the fear aura and on-hit-fear.
Immunity to illusion grants you immunity to Phantasmalkiller and Weird, and any other spell of that school.

Hmm, that kind of sucks. After all, how can someone die of fear when theyre immune to it? Plus it's mind-affecting, so it's also odd that someone with immunity to mind affecting spells can get hit by this. The spell may be an illusion, but the effects arent- for example, a character that doesnt have immunity to Evocation can still be immune to Bigby's Forceful hand by having immunity to knockdown (assuming Begby's is evocation, I cant remember, but you get the idea) and someone without immunity to conjuration can still be immune to fire and be unaffectded by flame arrows. Oh well. :(

immunity to death magic would save you from those, or immunity to the illusion school as others have said. i do not believe immunity to fear will stop anything besides an actual fear effect.

That is not necessarily true that if you are immune to it the illusion will not effect you. You could be tricked into thinking your immunity failed. Now with mind effecting spells I am not sure. It could be said the illusion is not actually attacking your mind and only just being represented by your mind as a threat. Just think that it is a spell fucking with your mind and not attacking therefore the real damage is caused by your mind and not the spell itself.

Remember that invisibility is also illusion and with immunity to mind effecting spells that still works.

I read somewhere that they are changing these spells to save vs. fear in HotU.

I find Phant Killer to be ineffective except against really low level beasties, anythng remotely threatening tends to make one of the two chances at saving vs the spell.

I generally dont bother with it cos it wastes a spell slot and is only useful against things that I can just hammer to death pretty quickly.

Its not good against mages (they usually always make the Will save).
Its not good against fighters (they usually always make the Fort save).
Clerics... no chance, they can save both Will & Fort!
But... rogues are quite suceptible (e.g. rogue bandits, halfling mercs, etc. it is very effective against).

Unfortuately, I don't use it much these days, I have more useful things for my 4th level spell slots. Which is a shame, I love it as a spell - it puts the willies up people because they know how dangerous it might be (i.e. it might.. it just might kill them) ;)
