A Dwarf Wiz Is this Allowed?

Post by Xeo » Thu Nov 13, 2003 10:05 am

Hi i have been in big debates with http://www.neverwinternights.com forum over the Character Creation of a dwarf Wiz.

i have been lets say getting into character with my Dwarf! lol

Testing on NWN games and getting the feel for it... Also been creating a short script to hand if anyone asks me..

"Why the hell are you a Dwarf Wiz?????" :P

Its seems that is topic has 50/50 response's, but not seeming to cheesie but this forum is the important voice at the end of the day as its going to be my home and adventure soon.

So will a Dwarf Wiz cause political or RP playing probs in the world of Avlis? I mean the Character on a basic over view was a outcast

i know there is Dwarf Kingdoms and they play a big part in the history of Avlis...

I know its up to me at the end of the day what character i first create.... But will this be a prob not on a character level but as a player lvl?

Just some thoughts plz to ease this mind of mine! 8)

I see nothing wrong with an dwarven wizard.
As long as he is good-aligned and joins the Ivory family

There are a few (not many) dwarven wizards on Avlis already. It's not the normal choice for a wizard, although it is maybe a good one if you want to multiclass (e.g. a fighter class or 2 so you can weild weapons and wear armor, etc.).

Dwarven wizards could make good crafters, e.g. they can hammer the steel and add enchantments to it (whenever 'enchanting' is added as a craft that it ;) )

The only negative aspect would be the "conflict" between the non-magical nature of the dwarfs and being a magic user. In first and second edition of AD&D dwarfs get bonuses vs. magic for this reason. Although with the changing of the game, these sterotypes may no longer apply. Especially in Avlis RP is the name of the game!

But traditionally the Dwarfs Craft magically weopons of great power so where they get the enchantments or who does it for them as they are a very soludued race (Keep them selfs to the selfs race and have a hard time trusting other races)

So i think its a slight condertriction in terms

The make magic items but aer non- magical users

Bit confused by that! lol

But the dwarf wiz is a outcast for reasons not yet been scripted in my character profile.

The reason dwarves were able to create magic items in 1st and 2nd Edition AD&D is that dwarven priests made such items. People always seem to forget that priests also can make magic items. I tell ya, priests get no love.

There is no reason to complain about dwarven wizards or sorcerers in NWN. We're dealing with 3E rules here. There are probably entire clans of dwarf wizards in Galdos.

I'll admit that I thought dwarf wizards, halfling druids, and elf paladins a bit odd when I first heard about 3E, because I've been playing 2nd Edition forever. But something that expands RP possibilities can't be a bad thing, can it? :)

That debate is retarded, and is full of ignorance, especially where the Forgotten Realms is concerned. Dwarven wizards started showing up at the same time the dwarven population started to exploded. This was called the "Thunder Blessing" for those interested. Dwarven wizards are looked upon as an oddity and with misunderstanding by the "elders" but those of the younger generation look upon them with hope. You see, with dwarven warriors and clerics backed by the arcane magic of wizards is just downright scary for any enemy trying to take anything from them. Dwarves were bad ass enough as it was, now they have wizards, ware to the morons who try to invade their homes...heh.

Fighters do it face to face, Rogues may do it from behind, Rangers can do it from a distance, Wizards do it from out of nowhere, Clerics may not do it at all, Barbarians may do it in a rage, Sorcerers can do it on a whim, Bards on a note, but Paladins have to pay for it!

They're short though, and not only easy to outrun but just the right height to take 'em off at their shoulders.

Thank goodness Vicky finally gave up that powergamer character, Tehenen. If I saw her one more time at the Ice Caves, I was gonna throw up! Jesus. To go from level 1 to 5 in 8 months is just ridiculous. I bet she has like 4200 gold too. Unbelievable how fast she was gaining levels and wealth. ;)

There's nothing wrong with dwarf wizards, based on the 3rd edition rules, NWN engine, or Avlis culture/history. Sure, dwarves tend to be fighters, but then halflings tend to be rogues and halforcs tend to be savage drooling monstro... err... barbarians. There are no rules however preventing any of these races from being any damned class they want to. In short, favored classes are just general guidelines for how the races tend to act - you can play a halfling paladin, halforc monk, dwarven wizard, or even (gasp!) elven rogue in Avlis, though I must admit that the latter was a kind of a silly idea. I mean, an elven rogue? Please. Thankfully there aren't any of those around. :)

Orc wizards on Avlis are a bit of a different matter. Read the World Information forum and look into the history of the Great War to learn more... basically, orc wizards are considered anathema by most orcs, and they are INCREDIBLY rare in Avlis. Starslayer already knows this of course, just pointing it out for the others.

To put it another way - you can play any race/class combo you wish. I strongly suggest spending some time getting to know Avlis' history, religion, and culture before playing though, so do take some time to look over the forums thoroughly before sending your short bearded mage into the world.

Oh, and don't name him "Black Lotus". :P (in-joke for those three or four KODT fans out there)

I have read the history of Avlis and mainly the drawf history too
As i understand it there are two dwarf countrys Deglos is one and Galdos is the other.

Dubgaldonkin mainly live on the Mountain side have have lighter skin then the Galdokin....

And the descriptive out look of the Deglos people were they are a openminded people....

So this little Dwarf is a very open minded Dwarf and Has a very very short story to go on his character profile explaining why he is a Wiz.. So if you are interested take a look!

(Is there a Biography page when creating character? I remember in BG2 but not bother to look on NWN.)
(The Dwarfs story hopefully is not a boring story just very short and not full of doom and gloom, well a bit  )

I mean i got anothore two weeks till i am playing and been so bored on other Servers as all i can think about is getting on this one! Even been sitting here for the last few days trying out names! How sad am i?!

And all these posts i have been putting up is at work! (Its boring here too!)

But i have read the history of Avlis thats why i think this Dwarf can work as i think fits into the history and make up of the world of Avlis............ :D

number of posts...

i think 1-10 is newbie, then you 'promote' to peasant. Check out various posters with their number of psots and their title to get an idea of the progression.
