Thanks to everyone for another fantastic Year!!
I was out of the game. Hung up the boots of striding. Packed away the ubiquitious and mandatory trench coat.
The name on the glass was faded, like my prospects; couldn't really tell you why I was in the office that night. The hope-filled masses might call it a stroke of luck, or Time was in favor - I think it was more for the amusement of chaos, the mess that would spill into my lap.
Hurricane winds. Heat lightning. Localized earthquakes. Take your pick. Any may as well have upturned my night a quarter though the bottle. Her silhouette blocked the faded letters before the door burst open. It was unlocked, but this was Verossa herself. Destructive casualties aren't high on the list, and neither was my doorframe.
A swirl of madness and cigarette smoke, laughter and liquor. A proposition - a job. A demand, really. No real choice then. Yes, or smoulder where I sat. One last hardboiled escapade for Mack Chandler. Don't call me snizzle...
Just hand me the boots and the damn coat.
She left. In the mess of my office, she left a file. A death, foul play - and a mile long list of suspects. The guard had nothing. None of them. Suspects are all transient - too much red tape anyway. Why does Verossa care? Don't question the narrative device. One is the culprit, a few might be in on it - but one poisoned the Fire Spit. One wins the prize...they go down or I go down.
And if this is the best list she's got, I don't like my chances..
[*]Leaf. Bymund. This one's a real fast talker. Real fast. Take a breath for the love of the gods, fast. Usually hopped up on sugar. That's as good as anything you find in a back alley for a brownie. Not terrible with a weapon in his hands either. Fast talking sugar-junkie? Belongs on this list.
[*]Arns. Koral. Another fey, another fondness for candy. Speaks highly of 'big bubbles of love,' whatever those are. Strangely veiled threats? Could be. Perhaps better not to know the details - unfortunately I won't have that luxury. Half-nixie, too. Means I'll have to comb the local watering holes a bit more literally for this one.
[*]Snarestep. Paddleton. Hunter, trapper, scout. A dear, dear affection for his Pecker. A bird. Can't say whether or not it's more hygenic. Real eagle-eye with a sling, though. The fella has all the makings of a possibility - could be a contracter. Hard to tell. Likely hard to find. May have to fashion a snare of my own here.
[*]Sandfirestorm. Vaako. Mouthful. Short on stature and shorter on patience for 'thinking.' His own admissions. But damn high on ability to kill. And kill swiftly. Sharp knives, and a sharper dresser. This tiny murder machine may be the chief suspect, if a blade were used. But still can't rule him out.
[*]Morrice. Jessie. Westshore boy done good. Well, not good, exactly. Dagathite, death division. I could stop there. It's eyebrow raising enough, given circumstances. I'll have to have a look about that town for this dreadlocked, chinstrap-bearded fella. Definitely one to grill. I mean, talk to.
[*]Elradra. Surname unknown. Mysterious at the jump, there. Dark clothing, possible bone arm. Not helping the case. Large sheath on her back, endless raking for knowledge. Wizard, figures. Bears further investigation, perhaps in the library. I hate libraries. Damn verossa.
[*]Forgiven. Nickname 'Givy.' By all reports extremely nice, bordering on non-hostile to anything at all. Great degrees of skill in healing. By all intents she should be written off the suspect list immediately. But it's too clean. Too squeaky. It could be the perfect cover.
[*]Dayhawke. Cole Squeaky clean Champion from the fey City. Said to command dragons, and break maidens hearts where ever he goes. Spend spare time brooding at the edges of dark forests and talking to waterfalls. Something not quite right there, poison doesn't seem his type of weapon, say compared to dragon breath, but who knows?
[*]Pia. Another singular name. Finding these common now as i scan down the list. Helpful, if there are no others to track down. Painful, if not.
Shifting reports on this one - likely with good reason. Crazy or misunderstood? Capable or reckless? I'll have to find out. The means of the crime would seem to be outside of her modus operandi, but - those can also shift. Not one to discount.
[*]Ayslynne. An-*a line of thought is scratched out, giving up on commenting on singular names* Green magus. A wide variety of known associates. Hard to get a bead on this one, exactly. May be best I snoop around the forest. Hate the forest. Avengers in all the good snooping spots. I hear there might be more nefarious things as well.
[*]Varson. Tor. Large tyeduan. Very large. Larger axe. Both user and victim of WOD. Whatever that is. Large bear head, larger temper. More likely to have cleaved or popped the head off the victim. Poison is for nithlings. But yet, She suspects him.
[*]Gallaest. Eowiewiel. Nickname "E." Clever. Blue elf. Strong archer. Blow a hole through a building strong. Brain of marbles though, from all reports. Obliviously happy. Almost endearingly so. Obsessed with chicken dinner. I suspect should she have been involved, she may have also fallen over.
[*]Ceril. Ronan. Wizard. Necromancer. Immaculate dresser. Crypt keeper. More likely to have ordered the hit than carried it out; file that away for later. It may turn out the culprit was just the tool. He may be that prime suspect, from a flick of his hand while paging through rune sheets. Approach with caution.
[*]Kalinor. Kara. Blackhawk. Pretty, maybe to pretty. What a lass like that running about with killer M'chekians anyway. Certainly high on the list, has a trail of bodies left behind her. (mostly enemies of M'Chek though)
[*]Rasul. Tybalt. Wizard. Shapeshifter. May have to comb the area for any reports of unusual creatures, though he likely wouldn't make that mistake. Wizard, remember. I'd expect the victim to have been ashes rather than gurgling if he were involved, but the abilities available merit continued investigation.
[*]Kiff. Thorfinn. Prime suspect. Known lush. Distillery owner. Speaker of the Hands, a known assassination group. Too loud to do it himself, but that may be the best cover to slip something. Will have to redouble the check of the party list, and interrogate the help. The everyman act...I'm not buying it.
[*]Hull. Harmon. I'm not aware if Toran favors the assassin, but it just mean I've never come across it. Rare, but possible in this line of work. Known purveyor of a sword he refused to use, this very contradictory nature may make the former likely. Topknot. I mean top notch, possibility.
[*]Taruma. Bald, confounding priestess. Dark brown clothing. Large hammer. Rumoured mother of the art of asking questions. Rumor unfounded, may require further research. Completely capable, if she felt like it. The trouble won't be finding this one. It will be wading through the swirling waters of her return serve, in the game of inquiry.
[*]Narwe Bard, Dagathite, all to familiar with death and the cycle. Seems to put on good face of being a healer type, but you never know with that kind. Dossier shows quite a few gaps, so what ever sercets she hides, might be the clue.
[*]Fell. Wylliam. Talks. At length. Whether you want him to or not. Purportedly a good actor. Avid popper and stopper. Imbibes great deals of 'enhancing' substances. Reportedly may be dead in a ditch somewhere. I may have to trawl the back alleys of Mikona for this one. Never count out a tricks-adour.
[*]Be'letane. Lilliana. Wizard. Scathing and abrasive, unafraid to administer dressings down. Methods are more ... shock and awe. But never discount a Violet from administering a quiet, choking death. Luckily she can be found in the woods with other elves. I find verlog only slightly less pleasant than the forest.
[*]Dermane. Vastin. Enchanter. Experimenter. Had this gone awry in a lab he would be the prime suspect. As it stands, he cannot be ruled out for the same as Be'letane - but had he done this, he would have been readily noted standing over the body making notes. If this dossier is correct.
[*]Sinnock. Vincent. Shadow mage. Shifted from white to red - possibly unstable. More than usual. Capable of anything. I hear thats the benefit of shadows. And madness. Yet to make a conflagration as a red, perhaps he went for a smaller start. Or perhaps the man stole a book. Somewhere in the middle of my list. Might shadow walk higher.
[*]Eider. Gann. Dire chicken wrangler. Possibly the culrpit without any awareness. Unsure if 'wild surging' may effect food. Will need a consult with culinary wizard flenken. Cannot be underestimated if thought slighted. Bedraggled appearance offers a lot of hiding space. Case open here.
