NEW COMPUTER
Hello everyone! I am getting ready to fire up a new computer, running windows 8 (yes I know linux is prolly preferred), anyhow, I just want to make sure I grab the files I need. I've all ready grabed the hak, log, and tlk folders/files. What else besides bioware kinda stuff do I need to save? I have the disks for the game, so I am not worried about that end of it.
Please let me know if ya need more information!
Thanks,
Joe

Re: NEW COMPUTER
Well you could save yourself some time in downloads if you have a portable drive or a large flash drive.
1. Run the Bioware 1.69 fix/update.
2. Copy your hak / tlk / localvault - this if you use character journals and spellbooks / erf / override / screenshots folders.
3. Then import them to your new system.
You can be all set. I have not tried NWN on Windows 8 yet but you may need to set them to run as administrator and in compatibility mode for XP.

Re: NEW COMPUTER
I save or backup the cd-keys. That's the important bit of Neverwinter Nights, it's always annoying to type in and especially in my case because they used a font where '0' 'O' and 'D' all look the same on the stickers.
Actually, I think I would save all the .ini files, because I have my server list in one of them and whatnot other settings. (This would also include the cdkeys.)

Re: NEW COMPUTER
Great, thanks for the ideas.
I distinctly remember that the NWN update process was a pain. Like you had to update to every level without skipping a level, and the updates were hard to track down. Did this 1.69 update remedy that?

Unless linux specific, I haven't had that problem before. I always just grab the latest (1.69 as you stated in this case) patch and it worked fine. Most of the time I did the critical rebuild one though just to avoid the hassle of trying to attempt it automatically

Re: NEW COMPUTER
And... if you can post-back how well nwn does under windows 8, I'd be curious...
Good luck!
Good luck!
Re: NEW COMPUTER
So far, so good, I couldn't remember where I last left off, turns out it was the wilderness. Seems to run just fine. When I first load up the game, it kinda baulks, so I just have to click off the screen and back to it so I can select play. Also my windowed mode seemed really small, so I changed the settings and with two screens, on is full of NWN but I can easily slide back n forth. Just copied all of my save files from my external hard drive... after getting the 1.69 critical and since I have the Diamond edition, I got the one for HOTU
I will let you guys know if I run into anything, but this was way easier than the first time I tried to do this.... maybe because I am not so much a n00b anymore

After getting windowed mode on there, the most important thing to remember is setting your NWN screen size smaller (both in height and width) than your desktop, or it goes to the default 800x600. Whatever your desktop size is, make sure you set NWN to something smaller in both directions.

Not as a player. Server, sure, but I don't see any upside from the Linux and Mac players having to spend so much effort to play the game that just works normally on Windows (even with the OS update pains). NH4's latest posts about problems on Mac, and anything about Linux installs recently... How is that better/easier?Your first post wrote:yes I know linux is prolly preferred

NWN is working fine on my laptop with Windows8

Life is never as bad as you think it is, although that doesn't help at the time.
