I hate the toolset

Post by Kandi_Nulein » Tue Mar 22, 2011 7:01 pm

By rights this should go in rants, but given this has nothing to do with me dissin' the Team, I thought I'd share with the world my utter fucking contempt with the toolset. (apologies for the potty mouth but I really needed to use the F-word).

Why o why dear readers does the toolset not allow you to perform the most simplist of tasks? All I am trying to do is have two rooms next to each other and place a doorway in the middle of them so they may be accessible!

Can you do such a mindnumbingly simple task? Fuck no! That would be too logical and easy and satisfying!

Instead you have to spend an hour poking through every tile in a particular set hoping beyong all fucking hope that you stumble across the right tile that will get you what you need.

I have this theory.

When NWN was created the folks who made up the toolset thought "I know, we'll make this the most user unfriendly and annoying piece of crap imaginable just to piss people off when they try to use it. Yeah, that should be funny... right on Bro!" *sounds of high 5's*

If I had the cash I'd be placing a removals contract right about now. You know where I'm coming from

*sighs* I promised myself I'd give my liver a rest this week. Guess I've broken the promise... *wanders off to get shitfaced* :sabber:

Terrain is different than groups for tiles. If you know that, then it it simple to know what you can connect and how, so I wouldn't blame the toolset or tileset. A bit more practice and you'll get it.

I <3 the toolset. Once you get used to it, finding your way around isn't so bad. Like Gorgon said, a bit more practice. Good luck, and I wish you lots of patience~

In my experience, the more that Devs try to make a program automate tasks for the user, the harder it becomes to get the program to do what you actually want it to... I like to say "It is so smart it is stupid!"

I just reopened the toolset after..... last thing I made was in 2004... I got a bit jaded with the scipting back then hence why it was closed.. all and all though I remembered a heck of alot more than I thought I would :). So don't give up just yet! maybe it'll come to you when your in a buzzed bliss.. although your liver may still hate you...

If this is the custom elven marble tileset you are talking about, yes, they have certain issues. Apply Patience. The default NWN1 tilesets should pose no problem. Actually, the NWN1 toolset is among the most user friendly game modding toolsets ever created, in my book. oo8)

The toolset is wonderful! I love the scripting editors too. I hear Sainsbury's are running a special on How To Mod the Winalot Way.

You'll love it too!

PS: You can always drop a few door placeables and link em up, surely!

The toolset's tile placing features aren't too bad; compared to a lot of programs they are fairly simple.

But don't get me started on the fact that it hates the z-axis for placables  Why do I have to set this manually for each of my placables by typing in a value... and why, if I move said object, does it immediately move to the floor? Fiends!

My main gripe with the toolset is that all the windows are modal. That single issue wastes most of my time in the damn thing.
