ninja So, number one important sexah question. What brought you to Avlis?
Joeyo I was waiting for NWN to come out for a while. I followed it's progress for over year, mostly because of the potential of persistant worlds. I had just come from playing on a UO RP server that finally called it quits, and was itching for a place to RP. Once NWN came out i started researching servers that would be persistant and roleplay. Avlis was the second one i found. I played on another for a few months, tried Avlis, tried 3 or 4 more, and settled on Avlis as my home.
ninja What set Avlis apart from the other PWs you found?
Joeyo Well, the other places had custom races, and classes and all that, but a lot of them were ridiculous, overpowered, and didn't make any sense to me. Avlis had this huge, rich background, and everything made sense and had it's own place. I wanted to be a part of that.
ninja You have chosen...wisely. What characters do you play?
Joeyo I'm mostly known for playing Bedlam Dender. i've had others over the years that never really stuck, like Ving and Iazo. Ziik and Xeslana i still play from time to time when i'm not in the DM client.
ninja Everyone loved Bedlam. What is your main inspiration for him?
Joeyo I don't RP Bedlam. That's pretty much me.
ninja Fair enough! Why did you decide to switch to the darkside and join the team?
Joeyo I live a very chaotic life. i've been around (for the most part) since 2003. Since that time i've lived in two states, held 5 or 6 different jobs, went to school, was homeless, etc etc... the only constant during everything was Avlis. Avlis means a great deal to me. I figured it was time i gave back.
ninja I think eventually, everyone who stays on Avlis will have some time on the team. What is the favorite plot you have been a part of as a DM, and as a player?
Joeyo I haven't spent a lot of time as a DM yet. only about a month. I haven't been a part of any big plots, but i really enjoy working in the UD a lot. As a player, i've never been able to get into any big plots, either, mostly due to my unpredictable schedule. but Bedlams studies into Wild Magic (and sanity!) was an absolute blast (no pun intended) from started to finish.
ninja what was your biggest 'OH SHIT' moment as a DM (or a player)?
Joeyo as a DM, it was when i was helping out the white order with a thing they were doing. I was just adding some flavor and it was my first time doing anything by myself. I made some wrong clicks, and the next thing i know an NPC roundhouse kicked a kid into a big red spatter. That wasn't supposed to happen. As a player, it was when Bedlam was new to wild magic. He cast Improved Mage Armor on himself and killed the Archmage of the Ebony. He was pretty sore about that for a while.
ninja Hahahaha. I love the answers to that question. Do you have a favorite NPC to play?
Joeyo not yet. I'm still an apprentice DM. Up to this point, though, i've had some fun playing Slaasik (is that his name?) the slave auctioneer in Verloghokbol.
ninja What do you like about being on the team?
Joeyo I haven't been on the team for very long, but so far, there's a couple things that i've really enjoyed doing. So far, my favorite thing is working with other DMs to weave a story. There's a lot that goes into that, and to watch it happen is very satisfying. I also like helping players with problems they might have, or questions. Also, very satisfying.
ninja who is your mentor, and what are a few things you learned?
Joeyo Belasco is mentoring me, officially, but i've learned a lot from other DMs, too. Mostly, right now, i'm reading back into older plots, and learning how to tell a proper story using the tools provided by NWN. You know, things like how to wtfpwn a player, how to conduct a proper TPK. Those sorts of things.
ninja hahaha. What advice would you give a player who is thinking about joining the team?
Joeyo i'd tell them to make sure that's what they want to do. While you're a DM, you're a DM. Your PCs will take a back seat. And if you've never fooled around with the DM client, there's a lot to learn, but it's great fun, and can be rewarding.
ninja What other games do you play besides NWN?
Joeyo None. Other than NWN, i keep myself way too busy. I wish i had time for other games.
ninja What keeps you busy?
Joeyo I work a lot, and i play music a lot, and i have adventures. i like to live life to the fullest, and most of the time I succeed at that.
ninja Let's talk about your music. What kind of music do you play?
Joeyo Rock and roll. Some call it punk rock, some call it sleaze rock. It's just rock and roll.
ninja Tell me about your band.
Joeyo We're called Joey Blackheart and the Gallows. KerriD plays lead guitar. Formerly, i was just the singer, but i've taken over playing the rhythm guitar till we find a replacement. We started back in... like '06 or something? We like to play for rowdy kids, who generally can't afford to pay us, but that's alright. There's been a few Avlissians that have seen us play live. We're on a short hiatus right now, but i'll definitely be posting dates up before the summer. Any Avlissian that wants to come see us will get in free. actually.. let me see if i can find this link... hold on Ah, here we go. the OSU newspaper did a full page article about us. Here's a link to the article on their website
ninja Nice! Are you guys on iTunes or some type of streaming media site?
Joeyo I think we got some older stuff on myspace and facebook. We don't have any money, though, since we normally play for free, or for some whiskey or somethin'. We've had some "people" show some interest in us as far as investing in us. I think ultimately, though, we're not marketable because we don't sing about being miserable, or autotune our vocals. the myspace address is http://www.myspace.com/joeyblackheartthegallows and you'll have to search facebook for us, i guess. I dunno the link to that, and by "we don't have any money", i mean it costs money to record, heh.
ninja autotune is the worst thing for the music industry. i mean...come on. Learn to sing. Speaking of music, what is on your 5 song iPod playlist.
Joeyo Well.. let's just see. I just happen to have my non-ipod mp3 player with me. 1. Mercyful Fate - Doomed by the Living Dead 2. Backyard Babies - Shut the Fuck Up 3. Black Halos - Darkest Corners 4. XXX - Miss Misery 5. Dead Boys - Ain't it Fun
ninja It looks like you are a fan of smooth jazz. What kind of work do you do?
Joeyo my title, technically, is "Industry Research Analyst/Database Administrator"
ninja Sounds fancy! Where are you from?
Joeyo I'm originally from KY, in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. I was born there, in a town with a population of 1,000, and lived there for about 25 years before moving to Columbus Ohio. Things are a little more my speed here.
ninja Finally, what is one thing that people would like to know about you that has nothing to do with games or music?
Joeyo I like spiders. A lot. It probably all began when i was a kid and a brown recluse bit me on the face when i was sleeping. (luckily i wasn't far from a hospital, where they treated me quickly). I was amazed and fascinated since then. I keep spiders as pets, and i go to pet shows where they have spiders, and i've studied them as a hobby for years.
ninja Eww. That's GROSS! Well thanks for taking the time out to do this interview Joeyo. Any final words to the Avlis community?
Joeyo Yeah. Thanks for always being there, everybody. You're awesome.
Be cool and leave a comment for Joeyo!
