Help me find a new place to live

Post by kai123 » Sat Aug 28, 2010 12:27 am

Title says it all. I've had it with living in the South! I would post my many and varied reasons but would probably offend many people. So let's just say the weather sucks, and it does.

So where can I go with low humidity and a population of at least 500,000? Oh, and no harsh winter. Lot's of outdoor activities are a plus. Also, moving the whole family with young kids and pets, so their futures are a consideration - friends, things to do, college ect.....

Funny. My brother just moved to Hawaii. Paradise it is. Also $7.00 for a box of cereal!
I really liked vacationing in Phoenix. Cool town.

Here's a plug for St. Louis. Cost of living here is great. Very family friendly. Tons of colleges and universitoids. But, yeah, it gets humid.

I hear that Portland is a real nice town.

Good luck!!

Intermountain west and west coast cities that may suit (low humidity and mild winters, outdoorsy, reasonable to good for families, university locales): Albuquerque NM, Tucson AZ, San Diego CA, Bay Area CA, Sacramento/Davis CA,

If you can endure some snow (low humidity, quite outdoorsy, good for families): Denver/Boulder CO, Salt Lake City UT, Boise ID,

Places I hear people rave about, if you can endure gray/rainy winters (and high(er) costs of living): Portland OR, Vancouver BC

Places that may also be worth checking out: Reno NV, Seattle area WA

That was a fun little quiz. I think cities in Alaska, Vermont and Maine popped up at least 12 times in my top 24. I think I must be pining for snow.

And for the original question, Colorado is awesome, too.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Keep em coming..

Several towns in the SW are being considered. Though I have never been that way in my life. Not sure I could get use to not having grass. And I have only met two people that grew up in that area and I'm not sure it would be good to judge all based on them :)

Hawaii would be great! But I am sure it is well out of my price range.

As far as Missouri goes: I grew up in Cape Girardeau and had relatives in St Louis. Neither place will give me enough climate change to suit me. Though I do like St Louis as a town i.e. the people and the vibe there.

California will probably be too expensive as well. From what I've seen the cost of living from the bay area on south if you're within two hours of the ocean is almost twice the cost of the rest of the U.S.. And I do know someone from San Diego (poor bastard), took a job here and totally regrets it, and he said that housing costs there are stupid high. He had to live two hours out of town just to afford it and then had that terrible commute to work. He still said it was worth it for the weather (high praise indeed).

I'll take a look into the NW cities.

Indianapolis isn't bad. Kind of a mid sized city with a small town feel.Cost of living and property taxes are starting to get up there though.I'd love to just leave and go someplace else, but finding a different job in this damn economy is scary. I absolutely hate my current job, but have to say the pay is decent, even though it just sucks all the joy out of my life.
I guess the grass is always greener..
A few years back a friend and me had talked about picking up and moving. For some reason we both thought either Vegas or Australia would be great places to live For Vegas we figured we'd get jobs in a nice restaurant as sou chefs or something.Sleep in the day time and work and party with beautiful women at night.I can't remember the reasoning behind Australia, but that was during a time in my life when I was a pretty hardcore practicing alcoholic heh.

There was a time I was actively searching to move out of the country. After reviewing the good choices I decided it wasn't worth the trouble. So I'll be staying in the U.S..

Try Seattle and Portland. A bit of rain, but they're supposed to be great places to live. (not horrible summer, not horrible winters, etc.)

I've just now started digging into Portland but Seattle will probably be off the list due to high housing cost. Unless someone knows a secret community close by that is affordable?

I would also suggest Portland Oregon. Average temps are from 35 degrees (F) during the Winter to 81 degrees (F) during the Summer. There is a bit of humidity in the Winter months, but the Summer's are normally pretty dry. There are mountains close by, and the ocean but a short distance West, a very green and normally lush place all in all.

However, if you are a sun lover, this might come as a bit of a shock, as Portland has on average 222 overcast days a year. If that is not an issue, then it might be worth consideration.

I have lived in the Portland area on occasion and I have enjoyed both the climate and the people.

Oregon also has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.

And I know people who have had to move because it was so cloudy all the time it was affecting their health. Right now its overcast, raining, and only 59 degrees. We wear sweaters all year round.

It is a nice place, don't get me wrong, but not everything comes up roses in the Rose City.

hmmm That's a bunch of time without the sun. How's the crime?

I ask because I used to work at a factory long long time ago and worked 12 hr days. A couple weeks one winter we had some overtime and I went over a week without seeing the sun at all. It does mess with your thinker, and not in a good way. I can only imagine what a whole city of people without the sun might do - especially if jobs are scarce.
