Whirlwind

Post by korak » Tue Jun 09, 2009 2:27 pm

I had a problem with whirlwind the other night. When I used it then I would not ever attack again. Finally it started attacking but would take 5-10 seconds after the whirlwind. I was talking with Pleth and she said that there was some lag so I told her I would wait and test later.

I tried today and again it does the same thing. I stood for well over 2 minutes and did not attack after a whirlwind. I ran away, came back and still could not attack. I used a kit to see if that would break it and came back and still could not attack.

Is this just my PC or have others seen this? It has done it on two different computers.

I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello?), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voice-mail. What did you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away?

Did it just start? I have used whirlwind for years and have not had any problems with it until the other night.

Scott

EDIT: I take that back, I have had it happen on occasion, but all I had to do was take a step and then attack again and everything was fine. Nothing like this though where it just never attacks again no matter what I do.

It seems to be quite recent - the last couple of months. I used to use Whirlwind a lot before that, but now I don't have it quickslotted any more because it's quite dangerous to suddenly be unable to attack anything! Logging out and back in is the only way I found to fix it once it has affected your character.

I've experienced this bug as well. Many times over the past month at least (my memory for how long on this is hazy). I usually log in an out to fix it. The monsters wait very patiently.

Usually the old Wilderness server, half nymph fighter PC.

I have had problems with it for 5 or 6 months. I posted to bugtracker but can't figure it out either. Same happens to me, I just freeze.

Unfortunately this is a Biobug. It was corrected in the Windows server but the fix never made it to the Linux server which Avlis now runs on.

That is why it just started happening to me then. Kind of stinks for everyone out there that took the feat.

This happens to me too - only on the Wilderness server so far, and only sometimes. It's been happening the last couple of months... I generally make sure I've enough fireballs ready, just in case!

Also suffered from this while on the Wilds. It seemed to be working fine in Deglos, but I didn't really test it since I was by myself, and didn't want to die more than I was already.

It did the same to me in Deglos when I tested.

I have heard enough bad things about the whirlwind attack over the past year that I won't take it for my character who is basically an archer anyway.
Banana's, they are the force for my colon. They surround and bind everything so even Darth Vader can take a proper dump.

Ouch.. Well, that explains some things.
Run away! Run away....!
Too bad. It really is a useful feat.

EDIT:
I found this on the NWNX forums. Haven't tested yet but will give these a go and report back:
It's not the intended behavior that's the issue, it's the actual behavior. Whirlwind can lock up your action queue, causing you to stand there unable to attack, and requires a relog to fix. This is apparently caused by using whirlwind more than once in a row. While that doesn't sound that bad, it's bad enough that none of our players will use it.
Activating/deactivating one of the modes (detect, stealth, expertise, defensive casting, etc) seems to fix it, without the need for a relog.

2 out of 3 times, whirlwind worked fine. The 3rd attempt (being sure not to queue more than 1) it caused the bug.

Also, no change in mode made any difference. Logout/login.

So, it's busted pretty good and should probably be avoided. Yuck.

I blame Kered Rose.

So, if you need it as a prereq for Weapon Master, you just take it and never use it??

Pretty sure feat related problems are Bioware bugs

This bug was apparently only ever addressed by Bioware in windows version of nwnserver. There is development discussion on the nwnx forums to fix this sometime in the future.

I have noticed with Nawen and Improved Whirlwind that if her weapon is buffed (anything that affects AB; other buffs seem not to affect) that the bug will appear and have to relog her to fix. Unbuffed weapon she can perform the feat repeatedly without problem.

If someone wants to get together and run through a series of test with me to see what cause the because give me a shout. I love the feat and hate just giving it up because it is bugged. Maybe spool can hook us up once he gets that bio job.

Pretty much what happened to this particular character. Looks like you're up for it too! Kinda a pain since WM prereq's are already STEEP! Having a broken one is the backhanded slap.

Are you suggesting that all players with WW should get IWW for free? Just be sure you're around to buff my gear!

LOL!!! You would say that Manny but I can't test Whirlwind cause Nawen got Improved Whirlwind. Hence I can't speak for Whirlwind bugs only the Improved version. However, if by some magical alignment of stars that would happen I like a Ring of Dru'El Kneecapping (Feat: IKD) but then we all know that will never happen either.

hmmm I was building towards Improved Whirlwind attack.. and in one more level I will be taking both the normal and the improved one.. because it would look super... and it also suit's Rye.. cause he's a Dagger Dervish.. so.. but now that I hear troubles about it.. should I still take it.. I never am going to go WM so.. only for Imp WW looks and kicks and multiple opponents would be nice but not if it's bugged.. and if I won't take it I took two feat's I never would have taken otherwise ((like so many allready.. *sighs* for combat casting)).. so.. this is crap yes?

what to do?

Well, I've sent the creator of the NWNX Events plugin a PM asking about hooking that Feat. I'll let you know what he says. Of course, The Team (tm) would have to approve any such code introduction. But, it would be nice to know if there was an option out there.

NWNX Events plugin was created specifically for the Linux nwserver distribution. It seems quite likely that there would be a way to hook that functionality; most likely with the 'Use Feat' event. Shoot, we may be using the plugin already FAIK.
