Newbie Question

Okay, before we get to the question, let me introduce myself. HI, im Shae Bloodbane. Now that that is out of the way.....Maybe I am being VERY impatient...but how long does the process to become a new player usually take? Ive been reading the site now for a while, and after each page of reading is over, I get more and more impatient =p. So the question is, how long does it usually take to become a new player in the World of Avlis? Welp...thats all from me for now. Thanks in advance.

Varies...sometimes a day....sometimes far longer. Remember that the individual who reviews applications only does it during his free time.... I suggest that you spend this time looking at the Rules (i.e., when can you cast adventure packs), and also reviewing the pantheon in Avlis. That way you can make a character with some depth. You might also take a look at the various guild activity in the Tavern boards to see whether you can modle your character to fit easily into one of Avlis' guilds. In sum, read up...and be patient....Avlis is worth waiting a month for.

You know....if you've really read everything, and twice at that....you'd have noted my responses to the last five or six people in the last week that asked that question.

It can take up to a week sometimes, there's one person that does it, he's really busy in life, and also does other things in Avlis besides process applications.

I have answered this question at least 10 times by now, probably even more often. There is a search function on this thing. If you think: "Hey, I have a question!", please also consider thinking: "I wonder if someone ever had the same question to ask...". If you think the answer just might be "Yes" then please first do a search, it will save you time.

Better yet, tell him about your upcoming entrance into Jr. High and all about your years of Diablo powergaming. Lastly, tell him the first character you will create will have a name called "Justin 'Night Blade' Timberlake" in honor of your favorite current boy band.

These things usually put you on the top of the list!

apparently, if I woulda just sat tight, and not complained/bitched, I wouldnt have made an arse outta myself. Application was accepted. Unfortunatly I am leaving for a week so I wont be able to play till I get back. Until then, good luck to you all. I hope to see you all in game very soon. I look forward to the experineces I will have here on Avlis, thank you very much.

I think that this is a pervasive problem on these boards. What often happens is a newbie rolls up, is overwhelmed by the sheer number of posts (raspberries to Jad et al. for their cutting edge work in this field), and decides it'll be much easier to just post a question than to sift through reams of crap to find what he/she is looking for.

Wouldn't it be helpful to have a sticky along the lines of "Newbies! Read this first before trying to use these boards!" It would be better than an FAQ because we (the board users) could add to it as things occurred to us that newbies might want to know. Perhaps someone could trim and tighten the postings every now and then to keep a clean, efficient list of things newbies should know about the boards.

Of course, things sort of like this already exist somewhere in the boards (and in the true spirit of laziness/efficiency that underpins the newbie-posting problem, I can't be bothered to pore over pages of posts about politics, potions, maps, craps and traps in order to find them all for reference). But those posts are a bit haphazard, the valient efforts of a few ex-newbies to impart what wisdom they've accrued thus far.

Wouldn't it be worthwhile to sort of gather up all the goodness that's in such posts and put it into one place, central and sticky, so that newbies can find it? It'd improve their initial experience AND cut down on redundant posts.

Of course, someone would have to take the lead on such an effort--
1-2-3-not it!

Even with high-end relational DB systems it's hard to get a meaningful query. With a standard forum search engine you'll get maybe a 50% relevance rate, and that's just too low for some people.

The point isn't that there is a way for people to find answers to their questions. The point is that newbies *DON'T* search, as evidenced by the preponderance of redundant posts. Trying to get them to change their behavior would be a losing battle, and people are clearly getting at least a little sick of answering the same questions over and over, so I thought maybe this would be a good solution.

I think this is a good idea. Maybe a sticky for suggestions to newcomers and for them to ask questions, and another sticky for newcomers to introduce themselves (as this seems to be a recurring theme too).

PS Just done a search on "newbie" and came up with 116 matches !! That would certainly put me off !

Then again, a FAQ / Players handbook would be even more usefull than the search function. Problem is, nobody wants to do one...
