PADRIR: Mikona Map Project, check it out.

Post by Imnadune » Wed Jul 02, 2003 5:59 pm

Okay guys, I have started a really ambitious and very time consuming project so I hope you will enjoy it. I am going to slowly make area maps for all of the cities and areas in the entire Avlis world! This, of course will take a while, so I will begin with Mikona. Here is a link to the first map: The city gates and garrison. I hope this is helpful. Government District, Temple District and Market District are probably coming next.

The map is great! I'd recommend leaving out the pressure plates, though. I don't think those would show up on any sort of map anyone would be able to buy/view easily. *chuckles*

make sure you dont go to far with your maps.

part of the fun is learning your way around the cities and mapping the wilds for yourself.

If you don't know what something is, please try and learn about it ingame. All of us had to, and I don't think many are inclined to just give the information away for free :)

Part of the fun of Avlis is learning little things like that. And knowing whether or not something is significant, is the mark of someone that's been around. You're a bard. Shmooze people, you'll learn quick enough.

These are great. You are quite the artist. I have two suggestions for ease-of-use....

First, in your key you show buildings as a white "a", but on the map they are white nubmers. I suggest you change the key to a white numbers for sake of consistency.

Second, you have labled the enterance to every single building in the area. I would only highlight the important structures, and leave the rest out of the map...

Again, I like these a bunch...

First: I don't think that I am going to change the key. Not because I'm stubborn (which I am), but because Padrir is a perfectionist and it would bug him so much (keep him up at night) to have the key not be the same letter. I know its wierd, but that's how Padrir is and it's his handwriting and his map. :P

Second, Padrir wants to label everything, even plain houses because he wants everyone to know what is behind EVERY door, even if it is nothing. This would also help prevent people from barging uninvited into citizen's homes. ;)

Third, and I mean this every time I say it: Thank you.

I have to second what ashzz is saying: please be careful not to give too much away in your maps.

A map as detailed as those you seem to plan to make could amount to a real spoiler for people who haven't yet found that neat little place marked on your map.

I have been wandering the wilderness for 9 months now, and only a week or so ago did I finally see it mapped out. And even then, I learned things I hadn't found yet, and that bummed me out.

Please don't be the guy who blurts out the movie's crucial twist to the table full of people who haven't seen it.

Don't mean to rain on your parade--just concerned about ruining people's fun,

The issue is not that padrir is making maps. heres the problem:

the players new to avlis, can follow your links, and find everything even though they have never met padrir or bought a map off him. they are now using ooc info to give their character IC knowledge of where things are located.

I mapped all of avlis in its current state with misty. I considered selling the map, however I came to the exact ocnclusion I note above. If i sold it to 1 person for 100000 gold, he could make copies and sell it to others for 10 gold, or worse give it to everyone for free totally ooc.

Orl has commented on this. In the end I think it was inevitable, however, it still pisses me off because it really cracks the ooc/ic line.

I only partially agree with your point. I completely understand that it could be a game spoiler and that's too bad if someone follows the wrong links. I shall add a disclaimer to the top of my website very shortly.

Now there are two ways to correctly utilize this information that I am providing. 1) Don't download the maps or even look at them until you have explored the area to your fullest ability or 2) view the maps for personal out-of-character curiosity and actually roleplay your character (i.e. your character has not seen what you have seen). The latter is not for everyone, obviously, especially those who are new to roleplaying. As a result I will suggest that anyone who has not yet fully explored an area: Stay away from that area's map until you have taken the time to explore it for yourself. These maps are for reference, not for exploiting.

That's as much as I can do. I enjoy making maps and I really want to make this knowledge available to those who want it. I do not support those who exploit my maps, but I cannot tell who and who isn't a true Avlis player. All I can do is put my work out ther and hope for the best. I believe that the majority of the Avlis players are honest, true roleplayers.
