Forums Migration

Post by Silk » Sun Nov 18, 2007 6:16 pm

As some of you know, we migrated our forums from avlis.org to blackdagger.com quite a few months ago. We did this for performance reasons.

Well, we've moved avlis.org to a Virtual Private Server and subsequently migrated the forums back to avlis.org.

We have control over how many resources are allocated to us, so if we have any performance issues, I can scale up our memory and cpu (at a cost, of course).

So if you get any 500 code errors, please let me know and I'll take care of it.

Thanks.

Do those resources include the bug tracker?

Since the Forum move, I can't log out. Will that change?

Use Firefox with all kinds of blockers. It helps. :)

Ok, I increased our resources.

Keep in mind that we're in a testing phase... so don't be discouraged. We need to find the sweet spot where we're using the minimum amount of resources without 500 code errors.

Keep the reports coming, thanks!

Since the forum migration, I've been getting intermittent 500 errors between both this forum and the A2 forum, and I'm using Firefox.

Have you been getting them since I made that last post in this thread? Because otherwise it means nothing...

Every time I tweak up the resources is a clean slate test.

The forum has been very slow at times but no errors so far. My main problem is that the bugs reporting page has gone walkabout again and all i get is a blank page if i click on it.

The bug tracker seems to have gotten lost in the desert during the migration.

I lost a few posts, but *touch wood* I have not had any problems so far. I have tried with Firefox and IE7. Seems a lot faster and no Timeouts yet.

If you think you've missed some old posts or outgoing messages, go to the message boards here on the current Avlis boards. Once there, edit the address up top in the address bar to remove www.avlis.org and replace that with www.blackdagger.com. The old message boards should show up now, you can read any left over messages and copy/paste any of them into the new boards to forward or respond to them. Worked for me!

Getting the occasional timeout, and once an error 400 (not 500, but 400).

Since yesterday my browser keeps crashing the second I log into the forums. Normally after a few tries I can get in but unfortunately its already logged me in before crashing so it shows 0 posts unread and it takes ages to work out what I have read or not read. Could this be connected to the changes? Or is it more likely something at my end.

I am using IE6.

For the technically lesser talented:

Use notepad or your favourite editor to hack the file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
(Replace C:\ with your system drives letter)

Add the line:
68.196.122.147 avlis.blackdagger.net
below this one
127.0.0.1 localhost
and you should be fine.

Cheers
