Help!!!

Post by Alphonse » Sun Oct 28, 2007 11:39 am

Ok. So this one is down to my own stupidity.

My graphics card had been playing up recently, so i bought a new one. Doing the sensible thing of uninstalling drivers before removing the old card i found the new one was fucked.

So i go and put the old one back in. I go off to find the drivers from the Nvidia site and now i have issues with NWN.

It loads all the splash screens but when it gets to the main menu all i get is a black screen with the NWN hand mouse pointer.

Its a 7600GT which worked fine in NWN before i removed the old drivers.

Can anyone recommend a build of the nVidia drivers that will work correctly?

Thanks

This is a known issue with the new drivers.

Check this thread on NWN forums for solutions: http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic ... 9&forum=49

Ah. I just started getting this problem myself. Generally I click randomly until I am online. If you can get to a 'loading module' interface, then you cancel that, it will display everything properly.

  • QFT from Aerill's link:
A viable work around for those users that either want to wait for a non-beta driver or do not want to roll their existing drivers back is to create a shortcut to nwmain.exe, right click on it, choose "Properties", the "Shortcut" tab, and then in the "Target" field add the following text after "\NWN" (i.e. C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\)

nwmain.exe +TestNewModule "modulename"

Please note that there is a space before the + sign in the above line. This will launch the game and immediately try to load a module with the name "modulename" (which shouldn’t exist). You could then use the "cancel" button to back out to the main menu and start your game as normal.
  • Best update your drivers to the newest version and do this. </2 cents>

I will not take, I will have.

Ok. This works for playing. What do i need to add to this for the DM client?

169.01 beta driver supposedly fixes it for folks.

http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic ... =49&sp=135

and direct

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.01.html

Iif you use vista or something else, just pop in the right OS here to get the right driver: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/betadriv ... lang=en-us
The beta driver selector doesn't seem to like 7,000 series cards on a few, but picking the 8,000 series gets you where you want to go.

If you don't like beta, use one of the drivers listed in the first post here (depends on OS and card).

where in that target line do you put the -dmc command.I can't seem to get it to work that way.
I was able to get in by trying to remember where all the friggin buttons were.It works but man what a pain in the ass.

After selecting DM client, have your pointer in the center of the screen, and slowly move it down while clicking. After you hear the first click, slowly move it down a bit more, after you hear the second click, move it up just a smidge ( still clicking) and that should get you in.

I tried making a direct connect setup ( E:\nwn\nwmain.exe -dmc +connect 192.168.0.2:5121 +password dmpword ), but that still took me to the black screen and I still had to use the above method to get in.

I haven't tried the other solution mentioned in that thread, which was try the Nvidia beta drivers.

You need to put quotes around the path that points to the nwmain.exe and then add the -dmc outside those.
Example: "C:\Program Files\NWN\nwmain.exe" -dmc

I was having the same issues - so I reverted back to the nVidia ForceWare 93.71 drivers - I have a 7600GS card. No matter what I had tried I could not get the new drivers to work for me. I am thankful I keep the old driver saved in zip files on my backup drive.

Check for extra spaces. The -dmc only helps if you are connecting, not for single player.

Quoted from some guy in the Bioforum:
For MP servers there's the direct connect shortcut:

"C:\Program Files\NWN\nwmain.exe" +connect 192.168.0.2:5121 +password pword

Also there's a direct connect shortcut for the DM client:

"C:\Program Files\NWN\nwmain.exe" -dmc +connect 192.168.0.2:5121 +password dmpword

Make a shortcut by right-clicking on nwmain.exe. Put either of the 2 above (depending on DM or normal client) in the "target" line and "C:\Program Files\NWN" in the "start in" line. Replace my examples with your path to NWN and your server's address and the password if the server uses it.
*Edits: Another one for single player to skip the bad screens (should work with -dmc too)
+LoadNewModule "module name"
Will load up the module specified and then stop at the character selection screen, so that you can pick the character you want.

+TestNewModule "module name"
Will load up the module specified, pick the first character available in the character select screen and then enter gameplay with that character.

Hope that helps,
Craig.

Tried those actually.Didn't work for me, except for the single player solution.

However, this solution worked (finally!Thank you baby Jebus!) for both multiplay and DM client;
Where nor Nvidia nor Bioware succeded, master Pain emerge victorius! ISSUE RESOLVED Running Forceware 162.18
To avoid this stupid bug, at last on windows xp, you should do the following thing:

1)Go to the installation folder, for e.g. C:\Neverwinter Nights\NWN\
2)Search for the executable nwmain.exe
3)Right click on the executable, properties.
4)On the compatibility dialog, check "run in 256 color mode" or something like that
5)Enjoy the menu again, and at FULL COLOR =P

Note: A friend of mine had to check 256 color mode also for nwn.exe and not only for nwmain.exe. Try until you get it.

And remember... Nvidia cards are the best out there, so it's no use saying "I will not buy Nvidia cards anymore". I am glad of my two 7600GT in SLI. The way it's meant to be played...

P.S. I hope in some kind of reward from Bioware...
I had to select both nwmain and nwn.exe and do the 256 colors thing. But it worked :)
[edit] If you're feeling adventurous , Nvidia released a new beta driver yesterday. The limited release notes say it's so you can run the Crysis demo that's out now, but over here http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=49463
someone mentioned that it fixed the NWN black screen issue ( for them) as well.

The 169.01 drivers work well for me, reverting to the old drivers was never an option to me, as they created freezes while playing videos and DVDs, and some oddities in other games. :D

Works great for me but I have one problem and wondering if anyone else has seen this.

So far everything looks great and colors are what they should be. However, 'Mixed Liquor Cabinet' is buggy. The wood of the cabinet appears as it should but the bottles are nothing but white lines and boxes.

I think that is related to your Haks or maybe the CEP. Try downloading some of those again. The cabinet is probably CEP unfortunately, so you may have a long download ahead of you

I downloaded everything CEP with the updates and even CEP 2.0 and still buggy. I rolled back from the newest drivers to tried and true 94.24 and when I logged in everything was the way it should be. Guess it was just something my video card didn't like about a few things about the newest driver.

Good to hear you are back up and running correctly.

It seems there are problems with the latest nVidia drivers. I recall reading that others had found the same thing. Let's hope nVidia get their drivers sorted out soon.
