Air travel in Avlis

Post by Flax » Fri Aug 03, 2007 7:12 am

I have been trying to put together an interesting back story for a new character and have been unable to find any mention of artificial flight in Avlis.

Do any sorts of flying machines exist?
If they do exist, what are they like? Are they like balloons or airships or jet planes or something else entirely? What sort of knowledge would the general population of Avlis have of them, or would it differ largely by location? Would people know of them even if perhaps they haven't seen them, or are they exotic gnomish contraptions that very few people would see the use of?

If anybody could enlighten me at all it would be much appreciated.

The only artificial flying I have ever read about are these postings by DM Aeveras.

As you can guess from the post, these mops aren't readily available.

There are plenty of stories about riding dragons and Shaada Sand Lizards in flight, and certainly lots of portal-hopping, but I can't think of anything written about dirigibles or airships or hot air balloons or anything of that sort, sorry.

There was a mechanical dragon built by M'Chek during the war. Can't remember if it ever actually flew and I am pretty sure that no one ever rode it whilst it was flying, but I guess technically that could be a mechanical form of flight. Deider would know more, it was his plot.

There are some small flying machines guarding a portal.
Then you must reconcile yourself to the fact that something is always hurt by any change. If you do this, you will not be hurt yourself.

X:| sand lizards don't fly. Swim, yes, fly no.

The flight assumption may be due to how the NWN dragon model works. I suppose WYSIWYG may force a retcon.

Hala had airships, though I've not been there in a long time.

Never seen any equivalent on Avlis, beyond the occasional personal devices already mentioned.

Here is the information relating to flying sand lizards. There was information shared IG about it.

Also, one of the Shaada's special attacks is the wing buffet, where it takes flight, though I'd have to find out more about what that entails.

Which is from Nob, originally, an excerpt from a Bestiary or some other project.

Yah, don't mind me, I mis-remembered a conversation I had with somebody about them

Little bump hoping someone on the night crew might be able to shed some light.
