I think it's also important to keep a character's skills in mind. Even with a negative WIS modifier, characters can be damned good at finding things (Search, Spot, Listen), be mentally tough or focused (i.e. Iron Will), and, occasionally, have moments of brilliance (albeit rarely).

Alignment also makes some effect here. A high WIS chaotic character, say a Confounder, may know a good course of action but consciously do the opposite, just for the Hell of it. By the same token, a LN PC, like a Justicar, may realize that the begger who stole a loaf of bread likely did it to feed his/her family and still submit the thief to the maximum punishment.

So... I guess the moral is that common sense doesn't always translate to a common sense action.

I had a wonderful Rogue with a WIS of 9.

He acted like he was CG most of the time, but he never knew when to stop and usually got most of the party killed. He's the guy who would say " I think I saw some neat traps and a chest up ahead" while the Mage is out of spells and the Fighter is bloodied up. Of course, he knew that he could always Tumble and run, getting out of harms way, end up hiding around the corner... while the Fighter and Mage got the living crap beat out of them.

He got the nickname Nero the Lucky because he was the one who would come out of that Death Dungeon slightly bruised. All that time I was just playing his 9 Wis.
