Alexis and Scellithid

Post by Rudiki » Mon Aug 22, 2022 8:42 pm

WOW! That was done well, and it was done right! I was completely blindsided, which I think was exactly the correct choice, and I wouldn't have it any other way, but since I had no idea what was going to happen, I was also completely unprepared (ref. Druid's frantic tells going: “Stop fainting; you need to see this!” :) ) for such an important event that directly involved and profoundly affected my character, with the result that my RP was really awful in the moment.

So, I need to apologize, and clarify. I know people will say I don't have to, but it'll bug me if I don't, so either bear with me, or don't read this; either way's fine. :)

BUT do read this paragraph: In order to write this I finally got the chance to read back through the log. I thought y'all's RP was stellar before, but now I'm even more impressed with everyone. From Sarith responding by immediately trying to use the Synergy Ring to Tor offering to do some cleaving, from Lily advancing with her dagger to Emick crying out “Oh, no, oh, no, oh, no!”, from Thienna ordering Krek to get Lexy away from Scellithid, to Finn's furious prayers, to Owen's final assessment: “Well this is fucked”, and all the many, many, many other moments from everybody else from which the above are only a small sample, every one shows so clearly that each character has their own unique and complex personality, and each player is committed to bringing it to life. It was great to be a part of that; thanks so much, and BRAVO!

Now, let the navel-gazing commence!: I am epically terrible at video games. I can't make Lexy walk and talk at the same time, and I certainly can't make him talk and fight; Lexy frequently dies while I'm trying to emote. Even when there's no fighting or moving, if there are more than a few people in a scene, I can't keep up, and my RP suffers. So a running fight with 30+ players (YAY, btw! :D ) and crazy lag meant there was no way I could read all the chat and do things and talk and emote. I wouldn't mind this so much, except that I hate to let Lexy down; he really deserves a more competent player even though he (and my other main character, an octogenarian) were designed with my limitations in mind.

This also means, by the way, that sometimes I don't answer tells or DM requests or respond to things said or emoted because I miss them or don't have time. When this happens, please know I don't mean anything by it! With anything of that nature, if you always assume incompetence on my part rather than malice, you will always be right (I also worry too much; it has bugged me for weeks that when Easley said hi to Lexy, I missed it, so Lexy didn't say hi back :) ).

So this is what I was so ineptly trying to convey when Scellithid made his grisly debut:

When Scel was first stricken, Lexy had just fainted from exertion, but he was at once jerked awake by Scel's cry, feeling his panic, looking around in confusion. Warned that this wasn't over, he tried to prepare. While Scel was drawing the map, Lexy did not interfere; he felt the urgency, and was mentally searching for the source of the danger, to counter it, to protect Scel.

When Scel screamed and fell, Alexis flew to his side to embrace him, and when Scel began to convulse in pain, Lexy instinctively, without thinking, empathically healed him, taking Scel's wounds himself (Lend Health 80%), but once Lexy realized what process was taking place he did no more of that and just concentrated on trying to help Scel fight it off, his mental manner toward the alien intruder that of a vicious little guard mink.

He was holding Scel as the transformation occurred; trying with all his might to reverse it, feeling it happen as pieces of Scel sloughed off in his arms. Lexy is deeply tactile and vocal, so he was touching and talking throughout, telling Scel to stay with him, trying to keep him there, feeling Scel losing the battle and being subsumed, feeling Scel fighting hard all the way, and making sure Scel knew he was right there with him to the last, fighting to embrace and caress the disgusting monstrosity and resisting any attempts to remove him.

Lexy almost never touches Scel, and tries as best he can not to show in public that he is madly in love with him, but this blew that completely out of the water; Lexy had no time or energy for pretense; it was patently obvious the only thing he cared about in those moments, the only thing that existed for him, was Sceluscio. He was frantic and urgent and wild and desperate and completely emotional. He obeyed no calls for him to let go and back off; he gave no indication that he even heard them.

Lexy did not try to defend Scellithid from any physical attacks, or try to get out of the way of them; his attention was all on the inner struggle. He was, however, determined to stay with Scel(lithid).

When the process was complete, and Scellithid shook him off and rose into the air, Lexy switched to search mode; trying to find anything of Scel that still remained. He never attacked Scellithid, or any of the other illithids; his sole focus was following it and searching mentally for any trace of Scel. He would have unhesitatingly followed Scellithid when it left, if he could have.

When Scellithid left, Lexy looked like he was in shock and completely exhausted, with a distinct PTSD vibe. He seemed preoccupied and slow to respond to questions, but he never broke down, and his mind was racing; his sole focus, then and thereafter, was on Getting Scel Back At Any Cost. The victory against the erratic barely registered, nor did Yshae's or Deo's deaths (not that he didn't care about the deaths; he just didn't have the mental/emotional bandwidth for that until later).

After that, things quieted down a bit and I was able to RP adequately again. Okay, I feel better now. ;)

Dude maybe you feel like you were flubbing it, but what you described is exactly the impression I had of Lexy that night.

+1000 to the other comments.

You give yourself far too little credit. You have nailed all that you wanted and more. It's been perfectly tragic.

And...

On an entirely selfish note - thanks for being the player I trusted you to be. There's some players I absolutely could not blind side like this.

Thanks for trusting the story and for being an absolute delight of a player to DM.
(and I'm so moving this to raves as you and everyone involved ARE SO RAVE WORTHY!) :liebhab:

You did a great job with Alexis during that whole Scel being taken over by that evil git squid face guy, and everything you said in this post is what I read and got the feeling for when it was happening. So as others have said, do not short change yourself as I for one thought you did great!

One of the many things we are so lucky about playing this sort of game in the format/design it is, is that you get to go back and read through the logs again, and discover things that you simply could not have read or caught during the heat of battle.

For example, It wasn't until mid-meeting the next day, while I was frantically searching my log to report what the Illithid said, that I spotted the part where Tikno found Yshae's body, and tried to raise him, and didn't get an answer. I completely missed that during all that was going on with Scel and the Illithid. All I read (or Icly, noticed) was Tor taking his body from Tikno to carry it out of there... and then it melted into a puddle of goo and ran into the cracks!!!

Which was why, later, when most people left, and everyone who was left was talking about Deo and Scel, Thienna was all "Hello, and Yshae? HELLooO, aNd Yshae?!?! HELLO?? His body just turned to goo for cripes sake!!! How can you write him off like this!!"

We all miss parts, especially with that many people yelling and emoting, there is no way that anyone could read everything - and that's part of what makes it so lifelike, for better and for worse!

Which is also why, at the meeting, I quoted directly from my logs. No way I am leaving some important part out of that. (Though one would think, with that block of text the Illithid was spouting off, it would be easier to find all it said? But noooo, it was massive scroll-scroll-scroll through the log, omwerd.)

TLDR? We're all with you in this!
“People speak of hope as if it is this delicate, ephemeral thing made of whispers and spider's webs. It's not. Hope has dirt on her face, blood on her knuckles, the grit of cobblestones in her hair, and just spat out a tooth as she rises for another go.”

+1001 lol

I certainly didn't expect it. I love surprises. This was a huge surprise. I thought you did just fine.

Selene's player would definitely relate with you. It's one of the big reasons she played in the shadows for a long time because when things got moving fast it was just an overwhelming amount of information flooding in. Especially if you're not a fast typer, it's hard enough to digest let alone respond and reply meaningfully.

I thought you did wonderful, doubly so given the extra information you shared. When the player is a little disheveled maybe it just makes it a little easier to RP the same! Lexi was oozing character depth. Having reactions that align with the character concept = :feuer: What we all saw was an impossible situation, vulnerability, panic, and emotions. The sloppy adds authenticity. Life isn't scripted. Good RP isn't either.

Your reaction was great, your RP was great, the IC response felt legitimate, sincere, and authentic. I was just happy to have been there for it :) Thank you for sharing that moment with us (not that you had a choice, haha)

My main ignores people all the time. But I feel bad so then I'll some times send a tell just letting them know I was only ignoring them IC, and say hi OOC in the tell lol

Thanks, guys. I'm so relieved to know it wasn't as bad as I thought.

Logs are a life-saver!

Yup, I'm a two-finger slow typist; I'm forever asking questions right after they're answered:

Tex: There's trouble up at the ranch.
Tex: Whitey got shot.
Slim: Trouble? What happened? I hope it didn't involve Whitey! :D

Littlewolf: “This is the stuff that keeps me up at night, too. We might be related.” If we are, the honor is mine (channels Lexy). :)

Darkfire: “But I feel bad so then I'll sometimes send a tell...” I am reminded of really early on in my NWN career when Dameon was looming around Mirtho Rest and being all mean and nasty and ominous, and suddenly he casts something horrific and immediately kills like 4 people. And I'm suddenly in the death plane with my first level first NWN character and I'm getting tells from DF going: “OMG that was a misclick; I'm so, so sorry, I'll resurrect you and give you gold, sorry!” :)

Thanks again, all. The reassurance means a lot, especially coming from such awesome gamers.

"Scel is an amazing RPer..." Damn straight. Druid wrote those deliciously disgusting transformation emotes, and Scellithid's supervillian monologue, too!

I have always thought that Scel was a great RPer, and now this shows his ability.
