In the file nwnplayer.ini, also found in the NWN main folder, make sure there's a line "Client CPU Affinity=0" (or 1, 2..., just not -1) near the top. If not, add it.

If you've verified that but it still don't work properly, answer the following question, if able:
I assume you have a multi-core CPU. Is it an AMD or Intel?
The graphics card, is it Nvidia?
Done and done

It's an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual
The GC is a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT

By the way, once it has managed to highlight the choice in the game menus (the one where you get to choose single- or multiplayer and the next where you choose LAN- or Internergame) they work just fine, it just takes a ages (i.e. a few seconds) to get from one to the next. The choice of characters once you loggend into a server stays extremely slow, no matter wether you have chosen one or not. also switching to playerlist is slow there.

Newer Nvidia drivers have multiprocessor support themselves that needs to be disabled. It's buried somewhere in the menus you get to through the systray icon.

I found something called "Threaded Optimisation" (or the like, since it's in German). It said it would allow programs to use the advantages of multiple CPUs. Not sure if that's what you meant, but turning it off didn't help.

That's the setting that usually needs to be disabled for NWN.
Since that didn't help, the last thing I can think of then is the AMD CPU patch, found below:

Sadly that didn't help either, though as far as I know these things are usually used to solve the problems of jumpy graphics and such, which is not the case. The graphics are just fine, what takes ages is stuff like the menus, char selection and such. Funny enough the ingame menus work just fine (inventory and such) also activating a quickslot. What doesn't work though (or puts the whole system to a brief stop at least) is when I try to say something. When I hit return everything freezes for a second or so, and then the cursor appears, when I have typed in what I want to say and hit return again, the same happens and then the char says what I typed.
