Down memory lane

Post by Albion » Sat Apr 29, 2006 1:03 pm

I have been playing the eye of the beholder mod and having fun. Playing that game brings back memories of the game that got me going with RPGs dungeon master on my Atari ST.

It was the first RPG i played and from then i was hooked are there any good NWN mod remakes of dungeon master and old games like that and which of the mods based on old RPGS would people recomend playing.

*thinks for a minute or two*
There is a great museum link here for Atari.

Most of my personal experience was with the Atari 2600

Getting to the Atari ST, there are a lot of links for this here including emulators for non Atari machines. (pretty sure I can't see them now from my work computer because 'games' are blocked by my server)

There is a specific discussion about Dungeon Master here and a list of awards the game received in 1988 and 1989.

There are some really great single play ( and multiplay) mods for NWN. Have you tried Pool of Radiance by Fowler? It's pretty much pure hack n slash, but fun. Also, someone named Zed did a "special edition, that supposedly fixes a couple bugs, but I haven't tried it.
Tomb of Horrors by Ghool s also supposed to be really good (All the ones I have mentioned were voted as " Hall Of Fame mods on NWVault btw ).
He also has a version that uses something called 3.5 rules, but it's fairly new..
Also mentioned are Against the giants/descent into the depths of the earth/Queen of the demonweb pits by Trevor Jones..

Oh yes, I got this list from the latest issue of PCGamer, they did a little 2 pager on NWN mods ( yeah I know it's PCGamer, but at least it had 2 good pages worth reading).

Pool of Radiance is actully fun, though it is mostly hack'n slash. The others I haven't tried.

Besides those, I highly recomend Shadowlords/Dreamcatcher/Demon. great series, great story. Also if you like humor in a Xanth vein, the Penultima series ( especially Penultima rerolled ) is a lot of fun.
And if you like rangers but hate the way they work in NWN, Kale's Rangers is another great one. The only bad thing, it's supposed to be a trilogy, but the author only did parts 1 &2 * sigh*..But it's still great. The author worked out a way to kinda sorta emulate tracking, and it really makes you use all the ranger skills like animal empathy, set traps,etc..The only ranger specific mods I know of. Some of the encounters are really tough, but doable. I really liked it.

The games that got me started were the dungeon crawler Temple of Apshai for the c-64 and the Ultima games. I never tried out the "gold box games" by SSI ( blasphemy I know).
