Computer Wasted By Mirror Site Download! Please read!

Post by Salvante » Mon Oct 06, 2003 10:39 pm

Immediately after comletely donwloading the UNiversal hak from mirror site HarverH my computer shut down, and will not come back on. I'm not sure this download is completely responsible for this most evil turn of events, but I thought someone should be notified. I know very littel about computers, so I cannot say for certain why this has happened. If anyone has any suggesstions how to remedy this, please, lay em on me.

Ouch, sounds like the power supply went out. Luckily, those things have gotten cheaper.

Even if you somehow managed to get infected with a virus, I doubt it would cause that scale of hardware failure.

ok
1) check your surge protecter and make sure that it work (try pluggin a raido into it, if the radio plays it works)
2) check to ensure that your power cord is tightly inseretd in the socket on the back of hte computer.
3) does it have a power switch on the back?
4) Smell around the back of the case... do you smell anything burned?

You are saying that there is no sign of power at all in the main system unit? No lights, no sound of disks spinning, nothing on the screen?

If so, I cannot think of any way that any software could have caused that.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like your power supply has gone - this can only be coincidence.

One thing to try before you rush off to your local computer shop. Does the monitor light up? There should be an LED somewhere, which would indicate it has power. If so and the main box is dead, switch off and exchange the power leads between the main box and the monitor. Then try again. If you now have your main box starting but nothing on the screen then it is only the fuse in the power lead. This is assuming they have fuses in the plugs where you are (as they do in the UK).

Also, of course, make sure all leads are firmly in place.

After that, down to the computer shop. Maybe they could take a look for you if you are not sure what to do.

Best of luck.

The problem has been fixed. It was a coincidence that this happened while I was downloading the hak. I just thought plp should know immmediately in case there was something fishy about the download...

The last big server crash (ok, a couple ago now...) was because it's power cord broke. I don't how it hapenned, it was working then it wasn't... What's even weirder is that there was an extra from a new monitor sitting on the desk the whole time (maybe the old cord was jealous?)... Anyways, I definitly didn't use the new one that caused everything by looking all fancy and new and put in an even older one. No problems yet, think I taught that new cord a good lesson.

I would just like to mention that ALL my haks come from Harvey's mirror, since it's ten times faster (for me) than the avlis FTP.

It updates automatically from the avlis FTP several times each day. The server is behind a router and runs on a linux system. So much for virusses I'd say.
So much fun,
yet so little time to enjoy it.

Don't know. But according to my copy of "Reliability and Maintainability in Perspertive" (by David J Smith, published by MacMillan), electrical cables have a Failure Rate of 0.5 per million hours. Of course that figure is per km, I'm assuming your PC cable was much shorter than that ;)

Just thought I would share that with you all!

Sadly, someone had the time and inclination to not only do research on that, but to post their findings, which is basicly an admission of guilt.

Even more sadly, however, some other poor smuck doing more researched whether someone else researched it, found that he did, then documented that research...

Now, here's the kicker... someone we interract with went and managed to find the book it was documented in, and quote it.

Society seems to have an abundance of idle time these days, doesn't it?:P
