Alteration machines!

Post by bolo » Wed Apr 03, 2019 5:32 pm

The weird topic I know, seeing as how these have been around for so long. However in all my time playing on Avlis I have never really messed with them, until now. Holy Shit! they're awesome! The other night I started messing around with some armor in anticipation of some upgrades and wow, I was amazed at all the options. I must've spent over an hour easily, just playing with different looks and colors. My only criticism would be that not all of the pieces I selected worked with my Half ogre's model. I do wish the races you can select included the dynamic race models. Some robes and some torso pieces, like tunic wouldn't show up on my character. But on the upside, tabbards worked fine, so there was a workaround. But overall, I loved it, and the price for alterations wasn't too terrible.

The reasonable prices draw you in. Before you know it you have an addiction. Fifty outfits you'll never wear except for niche social things, tens of thousands of gold down the drain. It's amazing what little effects you can get on a character with the right combination of settings.

'Tis true. Also, you can lower the prices by upping certain craft skills and selecting the option to do it yourself instead of having them do it.
I am definitely of the mindset that a good outfit can make or break any character.

And if you do this the machine will even give you xp for doing so. :D

Clothing alterations were something we wanted here after the CEP added basic altering as an option, but Avlis wanted it to be more of an IC thing that took PC tailoring and armor skill into account. As with a lot of projects back in those days, the work on it ended up being left behind when someone moved on from Avlis, until I asked PlasmaJohn what I should do with a list of part names that had been done up for that work. He had no clue about any of the previous plans, so he did the original "Sewing Machine" system in all of a few days (he's pretty amazing), and within a week I think, the first one was added to Ferrell.

Since then, the machine has seen several improvements by folks here, and there are all sorts of crazy ideas, both by staff and players, about what else to do with them. If you have any suggestions, toss them in the idea forum.

Adding half-ogres to the alteration machine does sound like a good idea. I remember looking at adding them back when I redid PJ's original version of the machine, but I can't remember why I left them out now. I'll see what I can do.

Unfortunately, you'll have a lot of issues with parts on those models, since they weren't designed to work on half-ogres. The next CoPaP hak update will hopefully address those issues (a lot of new/redone model work has been done for races already, thanks to Madk@), but there is no timeframe set for when (or if) that will happen.
