NWN on Ubuntu - It was the graphics driver!

Post by Gumble Tinkertumble » Sun Jan 12, 2014 6:11 pm

Who would have thought it. For quite a while I had NWN running on my Linux PC, but one day there was a problem with the graphics driver (after Ubuntu did an update). I re-installed Ubuntu and got it all working again, but did not switch the graphics driver to the proper NVidia one. I re-installed NWN, but it would not play ball. Nothing worked. It would just sit there doing zilch. I thought it was something I had done wrong during the install, but couldn't see what.

Well, yesterday I changed the graphics card for a newer and better one. The previous one was very old and only had 256MB of RAM, so you can imagine the improvement it has made. Taking a chance I installed the NVidia driver again and guess what. NWN works!

What is more Half Life 2 and all the rest of the Linux compatible games on Steam are working for the first time too.

Now I can while away the hours playing NWN on both my home PCs again. :D

I just had to set up (err, extract from the backup) my old client on a 64 bit AMD nVidia Debian machine, so I feel you there.
I'm still not quite sure about my nVidia drivers (I use the proprietary ones now in the latest version jockey-gtk was willing to provide) though, some textures are translucent where they shouldn't be and some of the outfits and cloaks start 100% invisible, but finally get rendered out of a sudden 20 minutes into the game.
Or maybe it's mesa...

Now that I have added all the haks and what have you, plus sorted out the sound.... everything is working better than before. NWN at full res, with all the stops pulled out and it's smooth!
