Why did you pick your alignment(s)?

Post by Lesli » Fri May 30, 2008 10:15 pm

Just curious, what drew you to whatever alignment or alignments you play? No judgement on the fine people who play baby eating evil :)

When I started out, I simply took the default alignment for bards (CG) and went with it. It changed a bit since then though..

I originally started an evil PC with the silly idea of being able to give the good people something to do. You know... what fun is playing a hero without having a villain? I quickly learned that 1) there is a lot more to evil than just being opposition to good; that an evil character can be equal in depth and be just as dynamic as other alignments, and 2) that playing an "arch-nemesis" style without completely ruining your characters playability and getting wtf pwnd at every turn was more difficult than I had originally imagined.

Someone should have told Sauron that no matter what that ring was going to get destroyed and he was going to lose. The "victories" leading up to the ending were just to trick him into thinking that he stood a chance. :P

Primary antagonists are destined to lose...

Sauron < hobbits
Takhisis < Raistlin < His conscience
Voldermort < Harry Potter
Scar < Simba
Sith < Jedi

...and the list goes on.

I like to continue playing evil alignment to prove my above theory wrong (as if!). It's challenging and it's what I am interested in playing in. I don't really have a valid reason why... I just do. Goodies lose their appeal with me after a short while usually. CN usually lasts a lot longer with me. Evil calls me.

Really...
It does.

both of my character Sinn and Ash started as CN because I wanted to play a different character than a typical goodie goodie or a evil meanie...

they both had their alignments changed one to CG and the other to CE due to IG things, other character influence, and avlis in general

one turned into the standard Dru'El elf, that could barley control his emotions and some what of a loner, while the other turned into a smart evil one in the name of getting rich and enjoying life to the max...

quiet the opposite fellows, one would never know they were related :D

I tried the LG once as well.. Wemic style, even romped with the OOG a few times in a effort to get into the guild, he lasted about 6 levels before I was drawn back to the my little tormented elven ranger

then there was Dorian who was so good an happy it made me almost puke! CG bard/sorc. 1/2 nymph... DOH! played him for a time (about 6 levels) as well enjoyed playing shows and meeting lots of people being very charming and all that before I was once again drawn back to my loner elven ranger, funny how I miss that fellow

*shrugs* ah well CE it is now.. until somebody or something changes that...

You are the Diet Coke of Evil. Only one calorie. Not evil enough.
If you had been truly evil, one of those links would have been a Dickroll.

I originally played a CG ranger, and then created an evil alt, just to try out being evil. I can't pretend that I play him anywhere near what evil can/should be, but I have a hell of a lot more fun playing evil than I did playing good. Maybe it's because I get to do things I would never ever even contemplate in real life, or maybe it's the challenge of being the bad guy.

At some point when avlis was being sold to me I recall having uttered the phrase "or maybe I'll play something crazy, like a paladin!"

So, y'know, LG was the only option for that one. I have at points regretted it :) mostly because of the reporting. But all in all it's been kind of a fun stretch, and something new, which was sort of the point.

My CG alt I made for the fun of being chaotic, because, well, chaotic is fun. The good angle arose, I suppose, mostly from the set of people I wanted the alt to hang around principally, but honestly I also like playing good. I don't feel like I get enough good accomplished in my day to day, and it's nice to be a pretend hero sometimes.

When I've contemplated other alts, the main factor has been who I'd like them to be friends/allies with.

With my main I picked the alignment matching her home plane and god. With my alt, alignment matches god and city. With my lesser known alt it had to be Lawful because of Monkness and Evil because I said so. God and home plane again.

It was the easiest for me to play

Actually I had totally different plans when I started, but I wasn't very good at it. So instead of changing alignments, I just looked into other ways of playing the one I have, and found something that fit perfectly. :cooler:

I rolled Siri as LG.

IG events made her go to LN then LE.

I blame Jade.

I also miss Jade.

I started playing CN cause i figured it was the easiest for me to play while i learned the history and lore of the game. I've since made a CE character because i wanted a challenge. I'm really not an evil guy, but I'm having a lot of fun with CE.

I play selfish characters, for the most part. They want the gold. They want soup. They want things their way.

For inspiration, I think of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. A movie of three completely selfish people after the gold, but in their own little ways. In my humble opinion, the movie is truly a primer on playing selfish evil. Could the character be a better person? Sure they could, if they were inspired by someone. Like in Unforgiven, where William Munny is 'not like he used to be'. For a while anyway. In summary, my alignment choices are all inspired by Clint Eastwood movies.

Except for the paladin, who was inspired by one of my teachers in Catholic high school.

My first character here is CG because I was once part of the crowd that treated that alignment in the stereotypical fashion. My second PC here is NG as a way for me to logically and rationally justify that alignment. My new main is also NG in part to get away from alignments; effectively being less about choosing what alignment to be and simply choosing to be who the character is.

Gith'zerai are known to be mostly Lawful Good/Neutral.
I had this concept of him, being very, very paradox, being somehow exiled from his society, completely against the societies belief.
I wanted to keep his neutrality, but with his twist. And the foig backstory concerning his past, the Skulls and his "greed" to be the best at what he does.
Ended up NE.

But he doesn't know he's "Evil".

I'm lazy. I think of a character concept, take an online alignment quiz for the character, and mark that alignment when I make the character.

Because my main is good, I have tried not to make evil characters to avoid being on both sides of some sort of struggle; and that's about as far as I care about alignment.

I chose TN as it's the most difficult to play.

Oh yes...that is very very very true. I agree that only certain people could pull that one off. The challenge, the problems the ones who just dont understand.

Actually started out as CN. But I realised pretty quickly that the character I was playing and the concept I'd envisaged were basically CE/NE. So that changed. ;)

I ended up playing a CE main more by accident than design, since she was originally only intended to be a fun alt with whom to blow off steam when playing my LG character got a bit wearing. Said LG character didn't last long, since the horrible min-maxed stats I'd given him utterly defeated my then even more minimal ability to role-play. Conversely Eldrea was relatively intuitive to play back then* and also found herself getting involved in plots, which I think increases the fun factor of this game by at least 200%.

Fast-forward a year and a bit to the present and I have to admit that I'm really not sure that I have the RP chops to pull off her chosen brand of CE long term. As Darkfire says, it takes a certain amount of skill to keep such a character enjoyably playable, and I am more than a little prone to making astoundingly boneheaded moves. :)

I decided to try out playing a cleric since I never have before. I didn't want to be restricted with the main "Greater" gods that are well established and packed with rules, so I picked Ra-Ghul who is CN. By blind luck The FURY of RA-GHUL had started up shortly after I created Sable (CN). It turns out I really like player her. Sooooo nice to not be good OR evil, but rather good AND evil. No politics, no paperwork....all she has to do is look good, speak her mind and let Ra-Ghul's faith be known. Easiest character I have ever rolled up, most fun, too!

Right now, it's the same as when started (TN), but my PC has been almost all over the chart, except CE, LG, LN (though maybe heading towards LN right now). The reason for TN in the first place was to not tie the character in any place before playing a while, and something more specific crystallised out.The others were because that's what seemed enjoyable or natural at the time, though the Lawful parts have been avoided due to being Bard.Which in sum leads back to the TN over time...

My original character was NG, because I didn't know much about the world and wanted an innocent alignment that was still malleable, so it could change if necessary as the character grew. Had I not rolled a goofy old LG mage, I'd probably still be playing that character, probably would have studied halberd under Rhissaerk, joined the M'Chek army, and turned a bit less nice.

Fergus was just an alt at first, wanted to play a character that had more past than future, who had a normal life compared to all the orphans, war babies, etc. and see where it went. Picked LG because it seemed to be the good choice for the character. Fell in love with him, and the rest is history.

My first and main PC started off TN, so that if I decided on a different path it would be easier to get to. After a few weeks It seemed like it would be fun to go evil and opportunity soon presented itself, and it was indeed fun.
