The Brightest of the Lights ~ A Eulogy for Nyx

Post by Jomber » Tue Jun 17, 2025 4:05 am

For those who don't know, my cat Nyx died almost a week ago. It's been hard, and I miss her a lot. As part of working through my grief, I made a poem in her honor.

The Brightest of the Lights ~ A Eulogy for Nyx

In a World where the sun never rises and darkness looms
A Lighthouse stands tall holding fast against the gloom

Defenders gather every day and every hour
Fighting together with hope and valor

Manifestations of pain and hate came the Scarred
Sinister creatures cut from shadow as black as tar

To aid the Defenders in their eternal fight
A lantern each gifted from the Lighthouse, the Last of the Lights

One Defender stood above the rest
Every day she did her best

No fight that came that she could lose
No mountain that she could not move

No storm that she did fear
No darkness she would let near

So bright was her Light that the Scarred made a plan most cruel
A Devourer of Time to assert their rule

A thief of what could have been
A reminder of what should have been

No fight occurred, so quiet was the blight
She was the first to fall, the first of the Lights

As the lantern flickered, the Lighthouse regretted the time now gone
More time that could have been spent together instead of writing this song

A final farewell was given much too soon
But her memory will live on as bright as the moon

Through tempestuous seas and darkest of nights
She was the brightest of the Lights

I love you Nyx. I will always carry your memory with me. I wish we had more time together. Had I known how short our time would be, I would have cherished each moment more, I would have spent even more of our short time being together, I would have taken more photos, I would have made more memories to keep. I feel that even if I had spent every waking hour, it would not have been enough. You truly deserved more than what anyone could give. Wherever you are now, I wish you the best, and I hope you always keep a part of me with you, as I will always keep a part of you. Thank you for everything. I miss you so much.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry.
“People speak of hope as if it is this delicate, ephemeral thing made of whispers and spider's webs. It's not. Hope has dirt on her face, blood on her knuckles, the grit of cobblestones in her hair, and just spat out a tooth as she rises for another go.”

What a nice memorial. I am sure Nyx must have felt how much you cared.
I like libraries. It makes me feel comfortable and secure to have walls of words, beautiful and wise, all around me. I always feel better when I can see that there is something to hold back the shadows. Roger Zelazny, Nine Princes in Amber

Loss of a family member is always a hard thing. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise just because the person in question was a 4foot.

You have my sympathies!

I understand your pain, when I lost my Rocky about 7 years ago, I recorded a song for him. It took me several years before I could get new kitties and to this day I sometimes call my new boy kitty Rocky, even though his name is Milo.

Sincerest condolences, I hope you have many pictures to commemorate the joy Nyx brought you.

Heya. I knew this post would be hard to read, so I waited until I felt like I could face it. Akai can't read it at all, so I'm writing (through my tears) for us both. You already know how we feel. I hope it helps, a little, to see how many people understand this sacred bond, and what you're going through. All our sympathy and support.
