Ways to give back

Post by Orleron » Thu Jan 27, 2005 4:43 am

Having a good time playing in the world of Avlis? Love the community? Made some friends? Enemies? Treasured acquaintances? Good! Would you like to know how you can give something back and perpetuate what we have here, so it can last as long as possible? Well, there's a few different ways, and at least one of them will fit your style. Read on.....

1) Become part of the solution! Creating a PW involves literally an endless amount of work! There's always something that can be done. Above all, we value community members who want to help and who can make good on their word! If you have any sort of skill with the toolset or with scripting, you can join up as a subcontractor. From there, you'll be assigned a task to your liking and before you know it, you'll be able to run through your very own area, created by you, as part of Avlis! Or, you'll be able to work on a system, like disease, custom races, etc.... and have your work affect thousands. See the subcontractor application posted at the end of this message.

2) Don't have any toolset ability, but you're an avid pnp player and dungeon master? Awesome! Become a DM. We can ALWAYS use more DM's, though this is probably the strictest and toughest thing to be chosen for. In applicants, we like to see: prior DM experience, prior Avlis PW playing experience, ages over 20, extra time on your hands, a cool head, communication skills, and a love of Avlis. Send mail to staff@avlis.org and ask for an application.

3) Can't do anything above? No problem. There are informational projects that need doing. They include: making written versions of modern Avlis history, based on posts from the Tavern boards, making maps like Camb's, and any other helpful organization of info for our website that you can dream up.

4) Want more creative things to do? You can always write for the fan fiction site and enrich others with your stories, poetry, and songs. Send all submissions to kit@avlis.org! Before long, you'll see them posted on the site.

5) Last but not least, if you just wish to be a player and have fun, but you STILL want to give back, you can always donate a little bit of money to the cause. There's a few different ways to do this. You can buy Avlis merchandise from our cafepress shop in my sig below. These items are very nice, and I have bought a few myself. You can donate any amount of money you like on the PayPal link on the front page. If every person here gave just US$5/month, Avlis would never have any money issues, ever.... and we'd have some killer hardware to boot. Or, you can join the fanfiction site, which uses paypal as well. This will take an automatic $5 from you every month so you don't have to remember to do it yourself. Don't like PayPal? Use BidPay... works just as well for donations. All of this money goes to keeping the servers running and the hardware current, and we appreciate even the smallest contributions from people, because in the end, it's the thought that counts.

Avlis is in a good state right now. We're a little short on labor, which is why I am making this post. You may notice things taking a while to get fixed, and it's partially because we've lost some hard-working staff members to real life recently. These folks are hard as hell to replace, but we're working on it. Until then, we'll be in sort of a holding pattern, just trying to maintain ourselves without too much expansive growth. But that could change, with your help. If the staff and the money started to roll in, chances are we could turn it around and bring all the new mods we've promised much more quickly. Oh it will still happen regardless... even if I gotta do it all myself... but something like that would take decades and we dont' have that long. So once again it falls to YOU, the players to step up!

Cheers!
