Hurricane relief charity drive
Dear Avlis players and fans,
Since the birth of my twins, I've been able to average a healthy 20 (chaotically spread out) minutes a day on the boards, and I'm very happy about that. Of course, that's not enough time to do any administrating, but I do get to post once every couple days or so. Believe me, I'm grateful for that.
Anyway, this post is more of a business post than a personal one, so let me cut to the chase:
Blackparadox Enterprises, LLC, which is the company that runs Avlis, would like to have a charity drive to raise money for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. As many of you may know, two hurricanes have hit Florida, USA in the last three weeks, and a third big one is on the way. Large parts of Florida are damaged. Some are literally in ruins. We have Florida residents who play Avlis, and I think many of them could elaborate further.
The Red Cross is heavily involved with relief efforts down there. They bring food and water to people who've lost it, and they run shelters for those with no homes left.
So here's what we're gonna do. For every person that joins our fan fiction site over the next two weeks, Blackparadox will donate $2.50 to the Red Cross Disaster relief fund. That is half of the $5 it costs to join the site at http://fanfic.avlis.org.
So, I repeat. If you make a new fan fiction account for US$5, Blackparadox will make a one-time contribution of $2.50 to the relief fund. In my mind, this is a way to make Avlis do something other than offer you hours of mindless entertainment. It's a way to make our community work towards a more realistic good. If you feel the same, and would like to contribute, please do.
To kick off the drive, Blackparadox has already donated US$100 of its own money to the fund. Our goal is to raise another US$50. It's a modest goal, and I think we could surely meet it.
As people join, I will be taking what little time I have on these boards to post a tally of the donation, in order to keep you informed, so you can see how close we are to our goal.
At this time, I will not be funnelling money from non-fanfic donations into the Red Cross. So for example, if you do not join the fanfic site, and instead you just give $10, then $0 of it goes to charity. It's gotta be a fanfic subscription. That's the only stipulation of this charity drive so far. Yes, it does limit the amount of money we can raise, but I want to let it go this way for a while because fanfic memberships help us pay our bills much more than straight donations do.
Thanks in advance to everyone!
(PS: Only amounts of donated money will be given. Names will not be named.)

Orleron definitely want the people to join fanfic, since the 5 bucks mothly get the avlis team a much more stable source of income. Money donated directly is certainly fine and noteworthy but its the steady constant flow of money that makes avlis able to plan for the future.

As a Florida Resident, and a Avlis player I am totally impressed with Orl's generous donation to the Red Cross..
Living in Gainesville Florida, I have seen some of the challenges people have had to deal with with the passing of the last two hurricanes. A co-worker of mine had his family residence wiped out by Charley. Another co-worker has no power or water to draw upon. These examples are tame compared to those who had to bear the full brunt of the storms..
Any donation will help those who are having trouble accquiring basic things such as ice, potable water and canned foods.
I urge all to donate what they can...things are bad here...and they might get worse...pray that they dont..
Thanks to all, Orl..and all those who support us in florida here at Avlis
God Bless

For those of you who haven't yet done so, but have always wondered how to give back to Avlis... well, here's your chance to do it while also helping contribute to a very good cause.
Glok's note says it all - the reality of the situation is that there is a very strong possibility that someone we used to game with has been severely affected by what has happened in Florida. Any support we can send the Red Cross will be much needed and well-appreciated; that it could potentially be helping out one of our own in their time of need makes it all the more necessary.

I'm already signed up for the fanfic site. If I were to cancel my subscription and resign up over the next two weeks would that work?Orleron wrote:So here's what we're gonna do. Why not set up another PayPal account, so those of us who are already subscribed to FanFic can send some money as well?
Life is never as bad as you think it is, although that doesn't help at the time.

Hehe... no Malaythyre, that would be cheating.
We are now up to $10 in donations to the Red Cross.
I'll tell you what. Once we get to our $50 mark, we'll open up the field to let people start donating straight money. The quicker we do that, the quicker it will open up. But my goal here is not to get money from people who have been giving us money all along. It's to get the NEW people involved with the community and to make them aware of how important it is to support this group.
Thank god (you pick which one) that we have a great group of consistent donators who help Avlis. We wouldn't be here without them. Seriously. You guys are the best. I want to *perpetuate* that group by adding new people to it, so it does not disappear over time, and at the same time I've become interested in helping the people who are having trouble in Florida since it dawned on me that many of our players are there.

Ok, I won't cheat. I know some folks in Florida, and I have some family down there, too. There's nothing stopping me from going to the Red Cross website and figuring out how to donate from there on my own, without making Avlis or you the middle man. In fact, I think I'll go do that right now.

Hello all,
Well, we're about half way through the charity drive, and coincidentally, we are also up to half of our goal: $25
Thank you to everyone who subscribed so far!
Let's see if we can get this rolling in the next week to meet the rest of our goal. Hurricane Ivan is on its way unfortunately, and it looks as if there will be great need in the pan handle of Florida.

I appreciate you doing this.
Though North Carolina wasn't affected like Florida, all six hurricanes that have hit land today have gone through here, so we have felt the effects (as you guys in NJ have if I don't miss my bet.)
Once again - Thanks for the support!
