Game Server Downtime Sunday, October 22nd

Post by dougnoel » Fri Oct 20, 2006 2:49 pm

We will be relocating the game servers this Sunday. We do not know how long the outage will be, but you should plan on them being down a good portion of the day. We will give you more information as we have it.

Let's hope for a best case scenario...

If my power can't handle all the servers... Mikona, Wilderness, and Elysia might be the only ones up.

I picture it like that scene from National Lampoons Christmas Vacation where Chevy Chase connects the power to all his christmas lights......its dazzlingly bright of course but numerous blocks of the city elsewhere are left without power... stuff them...Our Avlis servers are more important then their mundane needs! Bwahaaha!

According to the line meter the servers draw ~920W. If my math is right a dedicated 10A circuit should cover that.

No the servers are moving to a new home thats all. Silk is simply saying that his power system might not handle all the servers but from what PJ said this shouldn't be the case.

Simplified residential electrician: Standard residential wall outlet/circuit is 15A (1500W). This kind of circuit is capable of 11-12 100W (1100-1200W) light bulbs with a 300W+ cushion. Just make sure you have a good ground...

Pardon, but do we know when the server outage will begin? It would help with planning things.

Thank you.

We're heading down to get them around 1 to 2pm Eastern Time (GMT -5).

If all goes well, all we'll need to do is pick up the machines and plop them down in Silk's house and restart them, and then redirect the address to the new IP. Silk's house and PJ's house are about an hour apart.

Best case scenario... two hours of driving.... two hours of breaking down and setting up... two hours of fiddling.

*Jumps, hand raised* It would help to know the new IP - it will help some folk with DNS problems at least...

Well, to avoid a schedule conflict, I'll either take them down before I go to bed or shortly after I get up in the morning. So, 0100 or 1000 EDT / 0500 or 1400 GMT.

Yeah, it would help if you could post the IPs once you are done.

I would not see that as a problem. I have some labs that have around 12 computers on one circuit. The biggest load will be when you turn them on, so just don't hit the switch on them all at once. :)
I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello?), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voice-mail. What did you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away?

Just in case you've not realized yet.... The game servers are now off -line until further notice. :)

Of course you see that the necessary stop at the local bar on the way back was conveniently left out of the time table.
I would suggest that we add at least 2 more hours to that time at minimum; however considering it is football Sunday and the variety of topless bars with the NFL Sunday Ticket on the way; we could be looking at Monday morning.
So as a precautionary measure I have installed the Sims with the expansion in which I start my character as a single cell organism to help with the withdrawal.
