Warning - Portal Problems between Elysia and Wilderness

Post by Nighthawk4 » Sat Jun 04, 2005 9:37 pm

Warning

It would appear that several people have had their character files corrupted whilst portalling between Elysia and the Wilderness today.

We are looking in to this - with the hope that we will be able to discover the cause and a solution to this problem. Meanwhile, please do not portal between these two servers until we can resolve the problem.

I repeat DO NOT PORTAL BETWEEN ELYSIA AND WILDERNESS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

We will let you know as soon as we have any further news. Sorry for any inconvenience.

If your character has been corrupted in this way, please post a Restore Request in the usual place, which is Here

In that case, it might be wise to avoid portalling altogether please. :?

In a case like this. Server hopping is acceptable.

I hope it won't be too long, I am missing Kareth too much :-)

Although, it was fun to try running with an alt for a while I am not sure I would like it to be a full time thing!

Well good luck with it all and keep up the great work :-)

I logged out in wilderness yesterday. Would it be safe for me to log in directly on Ferrell server?

Yes, server hopping directly would be the safest way. ~CPU

I had an issue going to the Wilderness from Elysia as well.

My character thankfully didn't get corrupted, but I did have several scrolls and potions rendered useless. The scrolls appear as parchment paper but still have retained the spell names (ie: Heal) and you can even look at them to see what the spell does, but the scroll is no longer useable and sells for 0 gold now. I kept all the scrolls hoping I can get them repaired some how. Only had a couple potions with that problem (I tossed them), but they were not useable as well.

This is partial corruption, either request a restore or place the affected items in a p-chest. When the mod restarts the items will be restored. - PJ

So is this still an issue?

All characters that went corrupt - and a restore request was posted - are now restored to a previous date.

If it somehow isn't the correct version, let me know, or post in the restore request thread.

Just wondering, if the portals are currently unreliable (even dangerous for character health) has the hop code been turned off for the duration of this problem or is an hour wait still required?

I'm pretty sure that the code is still in effect. I'd be pretty suprised if they did turn it off for the time being. If they did turn it off it "could" have the same effect as if God turned off gravity in real life. In other words.. people that cant control themselves would turn it into a chaotic mettagaming mess. Doesnt mean its going to happen but, I wouldnt recommend it anyway. Thats up to the team though so I'm going to shut up now

I unwittingly trans'd after reading this thread from Elysia to Wilderness. I freaked of course once I realized what I did but actually nothing bad happened to my PC. I by no means am suggesting the problem fixed just giving a heads up that I wasnt affected so maybe the problem was just temp? Done on Sunday the 6th at around 1800 GMT.

This doesn't happen every time. Else there would be way too many people reporting this. It's just happening (happened?) more than usual which is why the warning was made.

Curious, I did some research on the bioware forums. Here's what I found:
Hey guys..

Got a question for players or bioware. My players when they portal from our primary T1 machine to our 2nd T1 machine are turning into Level 1 Chaotic Evil Barbarians. I am assuming that Level 1 Chaotic Evil Barbarians is the first sequence in the bic, since it looks like we dropped data during the transfer.

So my question is, since this is VERY VERY random, but definately game stopping, how are people doing with two worlds with one vault, with a portal between them. I would like to know what os, what code, etc.

I am using a standard portal code, and both machines are T1, AMD machines on win2k, using a mapped drive to share the vault.

Any suggestions, ideas are greatly appreciated before we go through the trouble of writing a vault sharing application. You can post here, email me at herner@landsoflore.org or on my site, http://www.landsoflore.org Looking forward to some community help on this problem.
And also..

Wanted to do a follow-up and continue on the topic of vault testing. We have now tested this vault using the LOCAL lan and over the INTERNET and although on the local lan its very rare that players turn into level 1 barbarians, insibible and chaotic evil, it did happen once. Making me wary to make the new machine on the lan permanent.

Both machines are running 2kserver, using a shared drive, and are hooked to a T1 connection, and have an excellent lan connection between them.

Anyone having any insights or ideas is invited to post them. We have tried every possible portal combination and scripting function without much luck so far.

Thanks for your help!
Herner Klenthur
So, guess what? Seems it's nothing to do with Avlis scripting or internals.. you can all thank bioware for this random bug :)

Just thought i'd pass this along.

Oh, one more thing to add to this that I found at the very bottom of that thread.
ALFA went through this whole problem and gyration a last year, with latency causing corrupted characters that ranged fromt the barbarian bug to crashing the server.

We switched to the OpenAFS client 1.27 and viola! Everything is perfect.

http://www.openafs.org/

We have had 13 servers up and cross portal connected since November last year and haven't had a corrupt character since.

I am not qualified to discuss why it works (some kind of way to cache information for unreliable or slow drive connections) but I know this means no more invisible CE barbarians or lost info about characters.
Yeah, I know.. ALFA  But, seems they fixed it by switching to the AFS file system, rather than something like Samba. Speaking of which, maybe the newer version of Samba that PJ upgraded to is creating more issues with it?

Just in case I missed anything else, the thread is here:

Thanks Alustriel for a very speedy restore job - I'm impressed and very happy.

The Elysia machine was in a bad state and heavy swap. It was given a full reboot. That plus Alu's effort seem to have cleared this problem up.

More evil Barbarians in Elysia, I say! That might shake things up a bit!
